I need to hookup my Kalk reactor. The options I have are:

    1. Hook it up to my auto top up.
    2. Use a PH probe in the Sump to tell the Kalk reactor to dose when the PH drops.

So for point 1 I have some questions:

    1. I read conflicting reports some say only run it at night (so you don't over dose)
    2. Some say dose all the time and find the balance between your Calcium Reactor and Kalk Reactor

    2. For the PH probe I often get a frown when I tell people I want to dose through the stirrer via a reading on my ph probe.

My logic is if PH probe picks up PH less than 8.2 then - Dose through Kalk Reactor

I really want to get this right the first time. I do have a calcium reactor that this will run with.

a kalk reactor is not really made to be dosed via a probe as doing it that way will add to much RO water, just do it via auto top up and it can run all day, but just have the stirrer pump on a timer so that during the day it will settle and be settled

I have mine set to a drip rate of 1 drop per second after talking to @charlv.
Keeps my PH rock solid stable....

Use the Kalk stirrer on a peri pump. Find out the average evaporation rate and pull through the kalk reactor when lights are off. Stabilizes pH

    Ok so two questions:

    1. I m assuming pull through means connect the OUT of the kalk reactor to the In or sucking of the Peri and the IN of the kalk reactor to a RO reservoir?

Surely that depends on PH usage / flux tank size an other factors?

Yup if it is a sealed reactor pull from reactor. Stirrer.. pull from Reservoir to stirrer.

    So this one http://coralvue.com/troubleshooting/reactors/kalk-stirrer-instructions/

Is the one I have will that work?

Second question is how do you work out evaporation amounts? Isn't it dependant on heat, fans blowing on tank etc etc etc

Good question, also sounds very confusing to me. I would go with what @dallasg said. I am also getting a reef octo kalk stirrer and Idol marine are setting up mine via the water top up, will also run it on a timer like Dallas said.

Yes , pull the water from your RO reservoir at evaporation rate to the Kalk Stirrer.

You should get an idea to the evaporation rate by the amount of RO you top off per week.

These stirrer motors do not last if let to stir 24/7. Make sure you time it.

One of the problems with dosing Kalk according to evaporation is that you do not control the amount of Kalk you dose. By dosing to a drip/pumped rate you can control.

Sorry, you can manually drip (into) through the stirrer or you can pump (into)through the stirrer buy feed pump on a timer or peri pump on timer or dosing pump.

Ahh ok and in your experience with the peri pump its a better solution?

Peri best as least hassles and better control of drip rate. Using small impellor driven pumps with airhose taps will clog up...

I like that, now need to figure out evaporation rates. So no need for auto top up if I do it this way cause stirrer will only be on at night right

And when you set it on at night, even with a peri pump, still set timer to not run continuously.
Personally i would go with a float switch, as evap rate varies from day to day.

Get yourself one of these and you can let it run 24/7 dripping from your auto-topup.
AVAST Marine Works - Kalk Reactors - Category Details

The new motor driven design of our stirrer silently and gently mixes your calcium hydroxide 24 hours a day. This ensures that you are always dosing the freshest possible kalkwasser to your system. Since the undissolved particles are always kept at the bottom and the clear liquid is always at the top, this is the safest available way to dose kalkwasser. Simple top load design reduces the amount of time spent adding kalk powder to the reactor, which can be refilled in less than 1 minute.

No more powerheads to clean or replace, no more large vats of lime water taking up valuable space next to your tank. Once you try our new line of stirrers you'll never look at kalkwasser the same again.

Note that our stirrers are non-pressurized chambers; water enters through a 1/4" John Guest fitting in the lid and gravity drains out into your sump through the 1/2" union barb fitting in the side. The lid is not fixed in place; it lifts off for quick and easy kalk powder refills.
