    HI all

As i will be having a mainly SPS reef. Wont not be heavily stocked for now. i want to know what is the possibility of adding kalkwasser solution to my top off compartment? I am talking about the super saturated solution after one has mixed it with the water already the clear liquid? Good idea? bad idea?

I would say its not neccesary, the coralline means you have enough calcium..ill also only start using it when my calcium uptake gets alot..

Ziyaad i'm putting 2 teaspoons of slaked lime in my 25L RO a week and i can see a different in alot. But i'm not measuring the Calcium. I think this is a big think when you have SPS.

Coraline is also using the calcium via calcification. So it also depleats you Ca.

100% correct .... and can eat up your Ca very very quickly so corraline growth is NOT an indication that your Ca is at the right level

i disagree, the presence of corraline IMO shows that your system is using Ca. If your system has corraline growning and you are NOT adding Ca in some form or another the Ca present will quickly be depleted and your CA levels will rapidly drop to unhealthy levels.

IF you have good corraline growth and you are dosing, then i would concur that it is one indication that your levels are correct

My coraline growth is insane. I also have alot of corals and stuff that need Ca. I also have Halimeda that uses loads of calcium.

Buy yourself a Ca test kit and test your Calcium levels before dosing so you know how much to add.

I think kalk helps to keep PH levels high and stable

One problem when using it in a top up is it can increase the PH levels to quick. and it can push it to high if there is allot of evaporation in one day.

Another thing or make it a question do kalk alone give enough CA? You will have to use other ca supplements also to keep CA levels high enough if you have mostly sps.

    My 2 cents

Tagging along here. Sentari, what top up system do you have? Won't the slaked lime clog up your unit?

You have a choice. Buy kalk from a LFS which might cost you alot or go for the cheaper version which works just as well which i slaked lime from a chemist.

Basic kits are Tropic Marine and i have a Po4 (Phosphate) Kit which is Elos.

I have a normal top up system connected to a 25L drum. So when i fill the drum i take a cup of the RO water mix 2 teaspoons of the slaked lime till its desolved and then chuck it into the top up water. Its called the slurry method. I'll try find the link for you. But i'm not testing the Ca with a test kit yet but i judge the Ca by my halimeda and my coraline. i can see when they start showing signs of depletion.
