Do you have a kalk stirer - If not -

In your size tank , simplest is to mix it with your top up water - ro - (top up for evaporation losses, after settling any sludge).
If you use NSW for water changes & don't have many corals your consumption will be low!
Otherwise you must test for Calcium (Ca) & add to maintain (400-450) , if you need to push up Ca you can use the sludge but only increase it slow - like all adjustments!

Why would using nsw cause your consumption rate to be low?

Connect top up pump situated in ro container to feed stirrer. The quantity of kal in stirrer is irrelevant, as only a little will desolve. Ensure that top up is done by dripping into system, as too much saturated kalk water added too fast will spike ph, cause precipitation and could wipe out livestock.
About 6tsp kalk in a stirrer should last a while, depending on size of system and evaporation rate
When kalk powder at bottom of stirrer seems to be getting low, simply add another 6 tsp.
Tgere is a wealth of info on the web re kalk.
Its good stuff, but can be dangerous if you dont do it properly!

Remember to clean out old Kalk from the stirrer before adding the next dose.

    Hi guys,

My kalk stirrer is enroute to me shortly so I have been reading up but still have a few questions.

Kalk raises Calcium and Kh in a balanced ratio. I would have to then raise Mg manually?

Now....If I find my calcium and kh is low and I test my mg and find it to be low as well and i bring this up to the desired level do I now raise my calcium n kh indivudually or will it raise to desired levels now that mg is back up?

If i find that my kh n calc is low and cannot be maintained with kalk even after increasing evap by using a fan it is assumed that kalk is not sufficient, will i have to dose individually to make up the shortfall or is there a way to increase the efficiency of kalk further?

you dont really need a stirrer, just do regular wc with a good 'reef' salt and it will maintain most of your levels, what u lack u can add manually or via a doser, stirrers are nice, helps a ton but man u need to clean out once or twice a week by dc entire reactor, give thorough rinse then hookup again and add new kalk powder

if your tank is loaded with kh,ca consuming corals then i would recommend adding a stirrer

I always thought it was an intermediate solution from getting a carx. I have been moving toward lps of late, and wish to try sps in the near future and wish to get parameters as stable as possible.

Any reason why kalk powder shud be removed after a week, Im sure ive read some guys just adding 6 tsp once its a bit low as kalk can only disolve so much in RO.

Id like to know the reason why so I can learn as well.

i dont clean it out weekly, maybe when its hard but seldom.

i run Kalk and a carx, the carx will lower pH due to the mere fact the pH is low in the effluent, and i use kalk to raise it

kalk doesnt all disolve and if powder enters tank it could coz bits of issues, the idea behind kalk is:

mix with ro,allow excess powder to settle at bottom and use clear water to dose, hence removing old powder before adding fresh

so you dont HAVE to,but eventually it will buildup, and cause strain on the motor for stirrer and reduce lifespan of reactors parts,so as part of maintanance its best to remove, keepn it working like new ALWAYS:thumbup:
