I have read that I should be cleaning out my kalk stirrer every week.

    WHY???

Isn't the stuff in the bottom just undissolved kalk?

i have also read that, dont know where.
it might just be to prevent any cloging or jamming inside the unit that might cause trouble for you.

maybe a specific make. Checking out the AM unit, not sure how it could unless you had Kalk rocks

If you made the DIY kalkstirrer the author advises to clear the mixture at intervals
and i quote "There is some minor maintenance involved in dripping kalk. First, you'll discover a sludge accumulating in the bottom of the container; simply pour it out periodically. Eventually, the airline valve and tubing will start to clog with calcium deposits. You'll realize this when the drip rate becomes hard to regulate or stops completely.'

    Viola!!

I used to clean mine out every month. I replaced the kalk and cleaned the machine out but this was just as maintenance. Like Gaz said, "Murphy's Law".

I would guess that the powder left behind behind after the Calcium Hydroxide is precipitated turns into Calcium Chloride. Dosing plain calcium chloride might have an opposite reaction to Alk, and cause it to drop.
