Just starting and ready to quit

    Hi guys.

    Ive had freshwater fish for more than 7 years now and decided to go marine.

    I have 250l tank on cabinet. Bought Reeftek TS3 :yeahdude:(went big to also use in future bigger tank), had sump made, bought aragonite, mineral mud and flotek S3100 return pump.
    Built my own overflow that works great :thumbup: (did not want to drill curved glass tank)

    I'm really frustrated, cause the return pump makes a hell of a noise. :cursing: I can barely hear the TV, not talking about sleeping at night. The TS3 is very quiet, now I compare my pump to it. Returned the pump and they gave me another one to try, even worse. I'm running out of ideas. I think these pumps are made for outdoor and not indoor use.

    Any suggestions on which pump I can try or what to do to get noise down will be greatly appreciated.

    Is the noise from the pump a vibration noise? If so you must check to see how it sits on your glass- if the rubber pads/feet are in full contact or not. If they are try and put something under the pump between the pads and the glass. Something reefsafe, possibly a thin piece of something and see if that makes a difference. I'm not sure how what ever you choose will do in a tank over time and whether its fully safe or not but to get an idea its worth a try. If it works you then have time to figure out something permanent.

    try a piece of styrofoam or a piece of rubber if you thinks its clean and safe to use

    Its a flowtek. Tried a Lifetech as well. Noisy even when I hold it in my hand, away from the glass.

    What kind of noise? Clacking, buzzing, humming?

    hey philip welcome

    just a question what model is the pump and what diameter pipe are you using as your return,

    i had a simular scenario and it turned out i was trying to force too much water through too smaller return pipe....

    it caused backpressure on the pump and the thing was noisy as hell..

    perhaps post a pic and we can see if you overlooking something..

    Thanx for all the advice guys.

    Its a rattling noise. have it on both pumps. I think I will try Leslie's idea. Will go buy bigger pipe today. If that doesnt help, I wil take you up on your offer, Henk. Will try later and post some pics to help you guys see.

    just to give you some idea, i tried to put a 4500lph pump through 20mm pvc with about 4 20mm elbows. the thing barely even trickled out at the top if i had gone to 25mm i would have been styling but it all depends on the pumps outlet size etc etc

    run the pump in a bucket unattached to anything, if the nise persists its not necessarily the pipework

    but what leads me to believe it is is the fact that 2 pumps were tried with the same problem occuring..

    I had the same problem with a Hailea 6530. Turned out it's a faulty impellor...

    Oh and WELCOME TO MASA...
