What do you mean by an earth plug point?
What setting must the multimeter be on?

    dc volt
3 pronged plug, the big one is the earth. Connect wire to that. DO NOT CONNECT ANY WIRES TO THE BROWN OR BLUE, NEUTRAL AND LIVE.
    Multimeter connected to that wire.

The same plug and wire will became your DIY earth point.

Does not matter, the earth wire does not go through a switch.

As long as the extension cord is grounded.

Here is the complete earth probe. For testing, remove the welding rod. Put the multimeter at the top of the connection block. Other probe of multimeter in the water.

    Hi @RiaanP
So the voltage was 8.47 about.. would this be enough to shock me?
I turned the wavemaker off and it went down to 2 volts.. turned off the return pump and it went to 0.8
    Am i doing this correctly?

    Yeah. Sounds about right.

Its like putting those small 9V batteries on your tongue. Although only 9V, it bites your wet tongue.

Never mind your fish. You will end up getting shocked. Replace the wavemaker at least.

Tank is isolated. Will not harm fish in short term.

Long term and higher voltage could lead to electrolysis around the point of leakage. That could change the chemical composition of the saltwater in contact. 8V is a bit, but not enough to be of real concern, OK depending on the tank size. A bit of chemical changes on a 1000+ system is a lot different from the same little bit of chemical changes on a 80L tank.

And yeah, 40V is not OK. Give it a few more days or wiggle some wires around as when you clean your wavemakers and that small crack leaking electricity will open up wider. Resulting in either you being shaken and wide awake when you feed the fish in the morning. Or if you got an earth probe permanently on the tank, a tripped house at 2:30 in the morning.

Been there, done that. OK, the second scenario. And its not fun being half asleep trying to figure out what is tripping the house power. But you cannot pull out the earth probe as that is what is keeping you alive.

Actually the first scenario as well, when I started out and knew nothing about earth probes. And 132V is not something to play around with barefoot.
