Last week i attended an Invasive plant conference. What was blindingly evident from all the talks was how destructive invasive plants can be and that how the introduction of one plant can spread so quickly and completely mess up ecosystems.
What else was interesting is how the pet trade is responsible for a lot of the aquatic weed problems. The conference had some really big players from DEA, DAFF, Nature Conservation etc. The lack of commitment by the pet trade to help prevent introduction of foreign species was also mentioned.
So please, dont ever release anything that has been in your tank back into the wild. This goes for freshwater and marine and includes ANYTHING that is alive (algae, fish, liverock). As cruel as it sounds to euthanize, it is the better and more responsible option than releasing it.

The conference was only on plants, but there should be an invasive animal one coming up soon too.

aquatic plants are a hugh problem. I have 4 FW tanks, all planted. We had to wait a long time for the list of legal plants before we could start importing again. All organic stuff that is pulled out my tanks goes into a compost heap at home and the water goes into my pot plants. Nothing goes down the drain.

With invasive fish - it is much worse. You now see those FW lobsters for sale at some LFS - those things are a nightmare and will destroy our local rivers. And then people also want to keep snakeheads - which will also destroy all local fish populations. Aned you can buy this fish at some LFS.

This is a good hobby but to make a quick buck, some people do really daft things
