I am busy looking for pumps to run my skimmer and to pump the water back to the DT.

I phone this one store ( not a pet shop ) and the guy told me it is illegal to place pumps under water. :confused1:
The guys solution was to use a small swimming pool pump to pump the water back to the DT.
I guess it was a mistake to tell this to my father as he is now very skeptical.

    :please:

So if anyone can shine some light on this issue it will be appreciated ...

Well, if that is the case then the world's manufacturers, reefers and petshops as well as aquarium owners are going to jail as they trade in and use underwater pumps :whistling:

Yeah he is getting confused. The only restriction i know , is that the pump is supposed to be SABS approved and that Outdoor and garden water feature pumps are required to have a 5 meter Cord.

the 5m cable length should be enforced but at 3m on all aquarium pumps imho.
Really annoys me having to join cables for pumps!

To make it safe, especially for your father, connect a wire to the earth leakage contact of your plug. At the end of the wire you use a connector block. One side the wire and the other side a stainless steel welding rod. Forgot the grade, 346??? The higher grade of stainless steel that they use for marine applications. As soon as something gives you a stray voltage into your tank, the main will trip.

All the informations about stray voltage you'll find here:
Stray voltage in your tank: You should be worried - Marine Aquariums of South Africa

is it just me or is the fact that the pump already submersed in water have no bearing on this.....(IE submersible pumps are made to run in/under water.)
Simply ask him to show you in what law is it illegal, if he knows its illegal he will know what law supposedly points to this ridiculous claim.

sounds like this guy is out to make a quick buck!

Clearly he doesn't know anything about pumps etc, or he sells pool pumps.

The electrical coils of submersible pumps are so well insulated you really need to take a chisel and hammer to it to do any damage and make it unsafe. That guy is a dumass and he should change jobs. Anyways, if so much wear should occur to leak water through the plastic (which is highly unlikely) the earth leakage relay in your distribution board will trip and keep everyone safe.
