Hi everyone, 2 weeks ago on a sunday I moved a boyu tank to my house, during the move I handled the lr and coral which were just mushrooms and zoas with bare hands.monday I started feeling fluish so went to gp,I have chronic ashtma so chest was not good, was off work the whole week but even by the weekend chest was still not good.so went to hospital on the sunday cos chest and breathing was not improving, xrays showed no real bad infection but was admitted and kept in hospital for 4days,so was discharged yesterday, feeling much better now but chest still not 100percent. Almost every year this sort of thing happens but after 2 or 3 days of hospitisation, I'm usually fully recovered. This is the first time its taking me this long to fully recover, and still not 100percent as I'm typing this.

Now I'm wondering if handlind the corals may have had anything to do with it, I did not consider this before and therefore did not mention it to the gp or doc at hospital.has anything similar happened to anyone here ever? Wondering if I should contact doctor tomorrow and tell her about this or maybe I'm just being a bit paranoid

    What you guys think

He he he ... the story of my life ..... Firstly VERY possible considering most asthma cases start with an allergic reaction to something ...... Take my case .... I'm born vegetarian so usually making the fishes home made frozen mix I end up using the pump .... If I plan on putting my hands in the tank I usually have a stat dose of pregdnisone or I'll be asking for a troubled few days .... I would suggest handling corals and LR with latex gloves ALWAYS .... Get them by the box full for about 30/40 bucks at the chemist .... Just be sure to rinse them thoroughly before putting them in the tank itselves .... Be thankfull you have not been whacked with the spines of brissttle worms .... Can make a grown man cry like a baby .... I think even Chuck Norris stays away from these worms:lol:

I dont think it could have been anything to do with handling corals.
Only time when corals release toxins is during fragging or when dying as far as i know.
Ive even fragged mushrooms and zoas before.
And ive handled many corals before and never has anything happend to me.
Just my 2cents, maybe the pros can advise better.

    Thanks for the replies guys
spoke to specialist who treated me at the hospital, she reckons it could have been the handling of the coral which triggered an allergic reaction which then caused the ashtma attack. i am responding positively to the meds so there is no need to worry.

Thanks for all the replies guys

never again am i messing in a marine tank without some gloves.

    UPDATE :

Hello everyone, i got sick again after working on my tanka little while ago, so went to my physician that looks after my ashtma condition and she decided we do some blood tests, just received results of blood tests now.

The test show a marked allergy to a general population of fish but especially prawns. the anisakis test was also high, which im told is a bacteria found in some fish/coral and algae.

    very sad news for me.

But would like to get this out there, so if any of you guys feeling abit under the weather after working on your tanks and handling corals and fish etc. dont ignore it, rather have yourself checked, you never know.
I LOVE THIS HOBBY, but its not worth my health or my life.

I dont suffer from any allergies but as a rule i try not to get my hands into any of my tanks for eco n bio reasons. There are a lot of different types of prongs etc out there....have you tried using gloves?

given all the bacteria cocktails we are adding to ours systems of lat i am curious as to what this will do if skin is punctured and bacteria enters?

we barely know what bacterias we are adding but by putting a mixture of them we may be creating a monster? just food for thought....

happy you are better and at least at apoint of identifying the prospective problem.. pity it was your tank though...

for the last 2 weeks or so, my wife has been looking after the tank, cleaning, doing water changes and such, i help her but dont get my hands in there much and i have been ok, so maybe i will go on this way if she agrees to look after the tank permanently.
    will chat to wife tonight.
its a real bummer, to sit on the couch and watch her move stuff around in MY tank, DAMN, its difficult, any person with a tank wants to stick their hands in and do things.

up to you, but i reckon have it checked bra. so you know at least, then you can take some extra precaution.

I agree, if I have any would, it gets infected pretty bad, these days I have gloves and if I forget, I always have iodine to disinfect the wound.

have used gloves yes, the latex gloves from dischem, but them are so thin, and then does not cover the arm, have spoken to Flappy and he organising me some Tunze Gloves, those are nice and long and hopefully not so thin and flimsy.

I know for sure now that i have these allergies, tests have been done.
BUT i dont feel i need to start selling off everything in a hurry now, i will just be very cautious, dont handle anything with bare hands, etc
thats why im saying all this, so other guys out there can also just try and be a little more careful.
