ok didnt know where to ask this so here goes. i have started dosing micro bacter and vodka, and the result is that my skimmer is now skimming a very very dark really really smelly skimate, before it used to be a dark brown and didnt smell so bad, now its black and the cup fills up quicker with the water level in the skimmer about the same as before. skimmer is a reef octo extreme 200.

yes it is normal. it makes the skimmers go nuts. one thing you might also notice is an increase in algae growths and bacteria blooms depending on how quick you started adding bigger amounts. if you have done it properly you shouldnt really see those effects. But this is all normal. Does that help you?

    Hey Wolve,

It is normal for your skimmer to work "better" when dosing these.

I would however urge you to turn your skimmer off for at least 4 hours when you dose the micro - bacter otherwise the skimmer is just going to take it in and you will be just throwing it away.

With regards to the vodka dosing - hope you are using it correctly - vodka dosing if over used can and will kill off bacteria too! you should use 1ml every second day per 400l of tank water for one week, then increase it to 1ml per per 200l of tank water daily for a week. Then you can dose 1ml per 100l of tank water once a week.

Also remember that the vodka can drop your calcium levels some what.

yeah i know i sometimes have a double with lemonade n they look at me sadly so i had to keep them happy,

ok jokes aside i personally belive that some of the best tanks in the world run this method (carbon dosing), do a search on the "zeovite" way of running a reef tank. for me personally my GHA infestation disapered and my water has never looked more clear.

Thanks Pugs, i am being very careful on the vodka, i was only dosing 1ml to my 500L system, and i used to dose biofuel before that, but stop both micro-bacter and vodka at the moment coz my KH was very low, my fault really didnt keep a eye on it. as for the skimmer working overtime, its almost like i need a mask to clean the cup it really pulls out some nasty nasty stuff now.

    Thanks... Now I know... :)

As for that... guess after the one dose they should be swimming sideways...

Glad to here the algea is gone... I got cyno I'm trying to kill :cursing: Used the wrong lights and my water temp soared and not much circulation. Sorted the circulation problem now and getting better lighting...
