Can anybody identify what the white growth is on my butterflyfish? He's a fairly new addition, been in the tank about 2 weeks, he seems fine, eating like a pig and swimming well.

    Thanks.

It looks like cauliflower disease , lymphocystis. It is a viral disease and I believe freshwater dip may help. From what I remember it should go away on its own if the fish is healthy and it is rarely fatal.

Did it develop after adding him to your tank?

Looks like a similar disease Preshan's angel had. The other angel eventually developed some around this mouth from nipping the fish. Both survived, if I recall correctly.

Dean i would catch the fish and scrape the lymphocystis off with a surgical blade. Then treat the fin with mercurochrome. Just apply the mercurochrome with a ear bud. When working with the fish, work with gloves, blade and paper towels that can be discarded. Lymphocystis is a viral infection and contagious.

Thanks. Not sure I have the guts to do that, but I'll have a think about it, I don't have Mercurochrome, will Gentian Violet be ok?

I would not use Mercurochrome as it contains mercury.
"It is readily available in most countries but no longer sold in the United States because of its mercury content."

    Mercurochrome
