Ive been looking trying to start a Nano marine aquarium for some time now, slowly but surly getting all the things together. But nearly gave it all up when hearing the price of live rock, R500 a kilo. :y13:
The other thing that put me off is when I see people battling not just algae but critters like apistia that was introduced by the live rock in the first place.

SO my question is do I really need Live rock? Can I not just use one of the bio cultures in a bottle and cycle my tank like that?

Alternatively u can start with dead rock and just add a piece or 2 of live rock to seed it. Just make sure the dead rock is cured properly or you could consider acid bathing it.

So I take it to start with live rock is kind of a must?
As I was hoping to avoid the pests like apistia too.

I don't think live rock is a necessity, you could start your tank with a 'live aragonite' of sorts and add dead rock then dose extra bacteria. Normally (as far as I know) live rock helps with the cycling process. Some of the 'Live' rock I have seen in petshops is absolute crap and would not put it in my tank.
I don't think you will ever get an aiptasia free tank though. When you get corals the rock they come in on could have a few hidden hitchhikers.
If you are worried about aiptasia it can be easily controlled chemically (vinegar, Kalk, aiptasia x) or biologically (Fish, nudis etc)

You don't need live rock, I started my tank with base (dead rock), lots of special blend and "mature" water from my other tank. This method may take a while longer to seed to levels that can support life but at least you don't get hitchhikers, like crabs. You may still get aiptasia if the mature water has spores floating around in it.

Just remember to quarantine all your coral that you buy if you want to keep the tank pest free ;)

If you only use bottled bacteria to cycle your tank, you also miss out on the good hitchhikers like copepods, tubeworms, fanworms, spaghetti worms. I also don't know if you want coraline algae in your tank, if so, how would you get it in there?
I have an outside tank that runs much colder (12C-20C). I use this to mature my rock. Worms survive but the aptasia seems to disappear.

Well I took for granted that corraline algae would make its presence known like the unwanted types have done at times in my planted tanks,
Its going to be a 30 liter soft coral tank. With perhaps one fish, I know nanos can be a pain in the neck, But I'm sure I can manage it, I was planning on much bigger, but I had to move recently so space is a issue.

I added two pieces of live rock from @mala1610 and then bought two new ones from a store and it had aiptasia on it so it's probably best to get rock from someone's tank already.
