Discosoma sanctithomae are probably my favorite of all the of unique corals that come out of the Caribbean. They occur in an amazing array of colors and have such interesting bubbly tentacles. Some Discosoma sanctithomae mushrooms even have sharp, spikey tentacles resembling medieval weaponry. These mushrooms are very showy and can grow quite large, looking more like true anemones than a mushroom anemone.

Discosoma sanctithomae are very easy to keep, they prefer moderate lighting and medium to low flow. I have found that the more vibrant color morphs do better under stronger lighting. I like to keep a grouping of different colors together in my tank, they are very striking since there really isn’t any coral that looks quite like them. Sanctithomae mushrooms can be trained to take frozen meaty foods like other corals. I like to feed mine when the lights are off, they usually completely close up around food and it is entertaining to watch. Since they grow well, they are a good candidate for cloning and aquaculture. They can be cut in half similar to Florida Ricordia and heal well quickly.

Sexy shrimp and other types of anemone shrimp, as well as porcelain crabs do well hosting Discosoma sanctithomae. These mushrooms catch the eye of everyone that comes to see my aquariums, because they are so unusual and beautiful. I think of mine as fluffy pets, they are always so fat and happy. Whether you are creating a Caribbean species tank or want some interesting mushrooms to for your aquarium, Sanctithomae are a great coral to keep.
