So since I added the Chromis and the tank has been going really well, 194l and I feed the Chromis (hermits) and two clowns twice a day (sea food mix blocks) they eat 90% of it and the hermits demolish the other 10%. I have started to notice though algae and am wondering if this is the start of an uncontrollable bloom. not sure if its normal or not....

I would like to stop it in its tracks and looking for advice:

Green Hair Algae. Its normal to get algae in a new tank. Its down to your phosphate and nutrients. Test your PO4

If you test for phosphate, don't be surprised if the results are 0 as the GHA would be using them up. What you need is something to consume the phosphates, like Chaeto..

Hmmm interesting, I am more a chemical kind of guy. I am not testing for phosphates right now just PH, NO2, NO3, NH3. I'll get a phosphate test kit tomorrow any other one I should get and while I am out any chemical :) @Treyman what about Reef Boost from our friends Prodibia?

lol why does every1 spell my name wrong as its right on the screen :whistling: .. Reef booster is a food for the tank. What worked for me is vodka dosing but you need a good skimmer for that. You can just run a phosphate remover and chaeto.

When you feed frozen food, do you strain the food 1st?

    I apologize @Tremayn my bad.

No I take it from the freezer hold it with the pinchers and shake it around in the tank the fish go nuts trying to catch the block while I am shaking it around. If I hold it with my hand they all come eat from my hand \ fingers.

Vodka dosing interesting ..... I will have to do some research on what the hell that is :)

Well theres your problem there ;) .. You must not throw in the cube like that. Its loaded with phosphates etc. You must let it soak in some RO then strain it and feed. Dont let the juice go in your tank :) ..

The first thing with vodka is that you have to have a good skimmer :) .. Dosing vodka works like the bomb and its super cheap. You need to research this properly first

research i will don't mind as long as it works thats what I am after.

Wow I didn't know that about the feeding. Why is there phosphates inside the juices? I will strain it from now on I cant believe its that pedantic around things.

Thanks for the advise. Now while I change the feeding method will the phosphates drop by themselves or will i have to start dosing etc?

Hmmm... In my opinion, the algae bloom is absolutely normal. This tank hasnt shown diatoms as yet and has been dosed with prodibio start to speed up the cycle. Using vodka, etc is in my opinion not advisable at the moment.

The sump has no dsb, but is filled with LR, bio balls and ceramic rings.... I think this tank must go through its intended cycle first before dosing vodka, zeo, etc...

agreed, don't mind the little algae on the glass just don't want to buy a comb to comb the algae hair if it gets out of hand :) that's all I am after.

Thanks for all the advise and help so far!!

@maxisoft What is the right point to start dosing Vodka (or Bioptim)? Is there any "levels" that needs to be achieved and what are they? What will be the downside of doing it to early?

Increasing the flow against the GHA helps as well and if you go he Vodka way please ensure that your skimmer is big enough and you dont miss any water changes...

By the way is that a Starfire glass tank:yeahdude:
