Is a standpipe necessary ?

Good day all,

I have 2 holes drilled in my tank, 35mm diameter for overflow and 30mm for the return.

Ive been reading up on standpipes and Durso - my question - is a standpipe even required in an overflow box ? The water can only drain to the bottom of the grate on top of the box.

can one not simply install a tank connector with no pipe for the overflow ?

Yes but it will be a significantly louder. A durso baffles the sound of air going down the pipe causing that gurgling sound.
