If they didnt go through customs, big problem, and then they will be classified under grey imports.

Correct, if they were not obtained locally and you have to take them in for repair, apple wants to see that the proper import duties were paid. If you cant provide the invoice from customs they will not repair it under warranty. I know this was the case with a friend who brought in an ipad without declaring it at customs.

I can't believe that this could be such a big problem. Surely these devices have worldwide guarantees. They don't even need an invoice, they can pick up all relevant info through its serial number. The world is small and people travel/work overseas for long periods of time.

I agree, but I think apple SA has a problem, take iTunes store for example, we can't download any music, but in Kenya you get the whole shabang, and I wont start on the apps, we don't have as many as other countries, including Kenya.

Yes, everything. The UK is a little tricky as you really need to know someone there but the US is very easy. Just google US iTunes account in SA and it will explain the whole procedure. If you get stuck just pm me.

    Well it's simple:

    1. If they brought into the country other than the cellular providers they ARE imports.

    2. There a few things one has to check there are two models of the iPhone 1. CDMA which is not GSM (won't work on any of our networks only networks like Verizon in the USA Etc) and then there is there is 2. The gsm model. Bing the difference it's in the serial numbers they start with 82xx the last two xx's differ.

Then there is warrantee risks you take not saying they will break but seen played and have mates with iPhone fives and there little things you want to watch for:, back scratches easy pezzzzzy and there are light leaks on the top edges.

From a difference they nice :) I am not sold on the screen length looks like a thin tall iPhone 4S.

They much much much lighter and thinner.

Would I buy it IN MY OPINION if you don't have a upgrade coming and want one take the risk and buy it. Apple hardware is pretty good and doesn't often break.

If you have a upgrade - they released in SA some of the store I think cell C has them Vodacom MTN etc will have end of November.

I'll wait for my Nokia windows 8 phone :)

Just one word of advise I bought a iPhone 4S last week for my car (apps only work with iPhone right now) manufactures are slow with the new charge and data change connectors. BMW told me when I bought my car they coming out with it only middle to end of next year ....

So end of the story it's totally up to you. The prices are reasonable oriental plaza has them for 10k.
