    Hey Guys

I started my iodine dosing regimine last night - as I dont yet have a test kit, the plan was to dilute 20mL into 100mL RO water and then add 20mL at a time once a week. I did this last night, added my 20mL, then afterwards I was fiddling with the tank and the container with the rest of the solution was resting on one of my bracings. You can guess what happened next.

Bumped it over by accident, spilling the whole lot into the tank (total water volume is 400L). Immediately ALL my corals closed up. Luckily I had a 20L bucket with salt water on had, did an immediate change. As the evening progressed the corals started opening up again and looking happier. Went to bed a bit worried but hopeful.

This morning everyone is looking happy, colours are fine and everyone is open. However the tank is MURKY! and seems to be getting murkier. Did a quick ammonia and nitrate test and they're both fine. Could this be related to the iodine? I am planning on getting 50L of water after work today to do another change, what else could I do?

    Thanks

Set your skimmer to skim VERY wet, as iodine is removed by the skimmer

I think you can expect some cyano, so put an airstone in the sump to increase redox

Iodine break down very fast. That is why you have to dose every day a bit. Especially with a skimmer working overtime.
I reckon by tonight when you get home you will have no issue.

I agree with mnd123 Dan. Skim wet. Do some water changes.

And it is called a brace, not a shelf.
It is not a place for coffee cups, sigarets, or dozing bottles.:)

Why were you adding iodine if you don't know what the level is? Do you add salt by guessing the level?

    lol, learnt my lesson now!

I was concerned my iodine levels were depleted, but had no spare cash to buy a test kit. I got the LFS to do a test for me the other day and the levels were indeed 0. I then decided to dose small amounts for a time and see what effect it would have, until such time as I could afford a test kit.

oh and can anyone confirm if the murkiness is caused by iodine breaking down, some sort of precipitation perhaps?

Danimal - all the advice is great so far.

Adding activated carbon will definitily remove the extra iodine as well.

Iodine kills off bacteria, it does not feed bacteria at all.

I would suggest dosing some SeaChem stability after today - else you might have a small problem with too little bacteria in the tank.

Danimal - the murkiness is the bacteria dying...... Therefor - if you skim very wet (and plan be sure to have enough salt-water to replace the water lost during the wet skimming) - the dead bacteria would be skimmed out as well.
