Lacking a Iodine dosing schedule I started to test using Salifert. As some of you might know the test has 2 parts. Iodide and Iodate.

My Iodide reading is undetectable even though I dosed the recommended amount 12 hours ago (Seachem Iodide). However my Iodate reads at 0.006 which is fine as far as I understand.

How much do you guys dose and what products do you use? Can I safely raise Iodide without effecting Iodate?

How fast can I raise it?

    Shoot!

I dont test iodine/iodide/iodate as most kits are useless at it. I just add a 1 drop of lugols per 100L of water about 3 times a week.

I also started dosing iodine a few weeks back as my xenia was dying and I heard it might help.
I have seen no noticable effect.

    I read this article.
Chemistry And The Aquarium: Iodine in Marine Aquaria: Part I — Advanced Aquarist | Aquarist Magazine and Blog

What I understood is the type of iodine/iodide/iodate that some test kits measure and what we dose can vary a lot, there still doesn't seem to be coclusive evidence to it usefulness in coral health and growth.

It also doesn't seem to really cause a problem if dosed correctly, I'm just not sure if its really worth it.

I am interested to hear other opinions on this, still trying to decide if I should continue with it.

I'm going to try and bring my Iodide up to 0.006. I'll try to raise it 0.001 per day and see where that gets me. I'll have to set up another dosing pump though :-/

I dose lugols. One drop per day. If I don't my Zoas seem to grow a little slower, but no major difference.

I find my Iodine concentration depletes if I don't, so something in my tank is chowing the stuff. Not sure how skimming effects iodine though...

Iodine is actually very quickly removed from the tank due to skimming and running carbon IIRC. Light also plays a role and its advisable to dose after lights out. Not 100% sure of the story behind it. Adding too much iodine will fuel algae growth apparently. Plating montis are normally a good indicator of iodine levels as they will start losing some colour when levels are low.

@pXius in that I mentioned article written by Randy Holmes Farley, it strongly suggest that you do not try and maintain your iodine at 0.06 maybe have a look at it.

I dont test for it. I dose KZ PIF (potssium iodide fluoride) now and then. I think my iodine levels are a bit on the high side as my prostata and mille have a green tinge at the base

    Thanks guys,

Reading it now, going to push it to 0.003 instead. I'll maintain that for a month or two and document any changes.

    ;)

Why exactly are you measuring iodine?

Because I'm uncomfortable just dosing it "every now and then" without knowing what the current levels are.
