Interesting Find

During cleaning of my substrate that I removed in going BB, I have noticed that it contained Iron in it. The only source could be from the crushed coral or the red sea [FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Aragonite[/FONT] that I used. After using a magnet found the even some small "rock" stuck to it.

The dangers of scooping sand from the beach/sea, i always run a magnet through it after someone found a screw in a new bag of live sand.

Yes it is the bought stuff.

Most of it is so fine it floats up when you spray the substrate with a hose pipe. Must have come with the crushed coral or [FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]aragonite and relesed when the stuff degrades.

Don't think It had any ill effect on the tank, as things were doing OK. Still plan to use the stuff in the refrigerium.

So now looks like we got to start running magnets over the substrate we buy.Cant even trust that.

Don't some PO4 removers use Iron.

From what I remember a small amount of iron is ok.

Hi

Experiencing the same with oolite (also bought), I broke a thermometer in the tank and use a magnet to pick up the little iron balls in the tank, had quite a lot of the substrate sticking to the magnet.

Did the same with other substrate I had, same result.

I can recall a thread on this subject, I think it was millepora that found a few pieces of iron in his aragonite and actually sent it away for testing, the test results came back all ok and there was nothing to worry about.
