I think all turtles/terrapins are illegal to keep.

Sea turtles are VERY illegal to keep. That said, I've had permits to keep the juveniles (naartjie size) that regularly wash ashore (loggerheads and hawks-billed turtles) in the past until boat transport back to the deep sea could be sourced, and unless you enjoy a urine flavored tank - don't even apply for permits.

    Hi Richard,

I would love to know more about your experience with these amazing creatures.
Please start a thread on it!

Would love to know what filtration, tank size etc you used!!!

After manta rays they are my favorite creatures!
I have dived with the manta's, but have never experienced turtles!!!

Guys Turtles fall under reptiles and as such follow their laws. Permits are needed to keep reptiles in accordance with provincial legislation and international legislation. Protected species are the hardest to get permits for, very common species are easier or not needed depending on your province. That said keeping turtles are not something to do in a tank keeping waterliving reptiles is a difficult undertaking and seeing as there are no small species of turtles very big waterbodies is needed. Furthermore turtle are not at all reef or fish safe and will need large amounts of feeding. They are carnivores. If a a chelonian is to be kept go for a freshwater terrapin. get permits if neccesary and keep it by itself in a specific designed terrarium. Hope this helps

I would think you would need a really big tank to keep them happy long term.
Have you seen how they swim.

They are really beautiful creatures and should be kept in the wild where they belong.
If you want to dive with them or watch the come onto the beach to breed book yourself a holiday in Aruba.
Well worth the trip to see these amazing animals in the wild.
