Getting there slowly I see. Just from my side.

Your sump won't work as it should. A DSB must be between 12 and 15cm deep consisting of very fine sand. Why is it suspended? In order to get the full anaerobic effect, no oxygen rich water must be able to reach the bottom layers.

Ceramic noodles/rings like you have in the last compartment also causes high nitrates just like bio-balls - it will be best to remove them now seeing that your bio-load is very low.

Why are you covering the sump? It is good to have max evapouration as it is good for cooling and gas exchange. The only downside of increased evapouration is you'll need to top up more RO water daily.

    Getting the cabinet done.
    One more piece added!!
I then made a BIG mistake and got this nennie:). had to take him back to the LFS.
My tank had only been running for about 3 months, got some advise from the forum and decided to call it a day and take him back:(.
My Hermit crab would go and steal food everytime I fed the Nennie.
This is what he looked like after being harrased so much. He detached shortly after and was in my only in my tank for about 2 weeks after this before going back to LFS.
    Poor Nennie:(
    [IMG]
This was my 1st Clown fish...thought he might cheer the nennie up! He ended up commiting Harri kiri 3 days after...got glass covers for my tank after that!

Is your tank only sandstone or did you seed it with some LR?
How long has your tank been running?

    Hi Aslam,

Not at all, sandstone is actually very hard to find! I stumbled across some at a Not so Local Fish Shop in Benoni or Boxsburg. They have a tank there that does not have 1 piece of "Live Rock" in it...only sand stone...all I can say is you need to see it to believe it! Basically over a period of time (probably years) it becomes encrusted with corraline algae seeded from the other rock and looks like "live rock". It does not have the same "filtering" capabilities as real "live rock" but goes along way to bringing the cost down. I bought 30kg at R30 per kg! So that what you see in my tank is 30kg of sandstone...R900 compared to say R4000! Mine is slowly being encrusted with red and purple corraline algae!

Nice start. I see you going the plenum route. Let us know how it goes? One suggestion. Tidy up your electrics as you need a little water on the multiplug and things can go horribly wrong. I'm glad you took the anemone back

    Hi Tobes,

The DSB...if you wanna call it that was setup along the "plenum system" It was talked about allot in the 1st book I was given (the one that started this whole journey!) Basically as you see it is exactly how its detailed in the book. I think the book is a little outdated, but I think it was the start of the DSB idea! I am intending do add some more sand to make it a little deeper though! it is currently 12cm deep with meshing between the 2 different layers of course coral and fine crushed coral. I dont see any problem with it being raised provided I get the depth of gravel up a little more closer to 15cm?!?!

The ceramic rings were removed quiet some time ago (again on recomendations from this forum) slowly over a couple weeks. I have also since added pirugen in a stocking in the sump and also grow some cheato! All of these little changes have really help rid my setup of hair algae and cyno...Ill post some more pics and you will see what a problem I had!

I then got Mr Scopa's Tang to help "Lenny" the blenny out with the algae situation! He is a great fish!!
This is my favourite fish! Yellow Sailfin Tang. He has really grown and added about 3 weeks after Scopa Tang. The filter behind him needed to go soon!

You can see the difference in algae with the tangs and rockskipper after a few weeks!
