Hi Pico Girl - Yes, you should be able to keep them (but only them, then). Whether they would breed is another story. That I would not be able to answer you. Fish usually breeds when they feel completely comfortable in their environments. That said - I think that we should wait for our local fish-breeding "specialist" (LuckyFish a.k.a Marcel) to answer here, as he has had the best success with breeding marine fish, on our forum (as far as I know)...

Just to inform you Pico-girl, they are on the IUCN red data list as an endangered species.
They were all I wanted when I first saw them. But wild populations are extremely restricted and crashing due to human collection....

Sorry to raise an unpopular point among reefers. They are a beautiful fish, and most people who have them didn't know that they were endangered before they bought them. But now you know.

    Hi Pico Girl,

    Welcome !

Just a word of warning on the Midas, they are known jumpers so maybe not the best choice.

Perhaps see if you can get aquacultured Baggai's

Pico, why not get an easier setup going with the likes of a clownfish (nemo) hosting in something like a hariy mushroom or the likes. THere are many options available to you here, just stay away from anemone's please... Dad'll be able to tell you why.

Midas Blennys, as with many other blennies, dragonettes and gobies, are all nice for nano setups, but they have a tendency to jump. And as far as I recall, the pico tank is open top. That said too, you need to get a fish species that is stronger, and more immune to desease. One issue with nano tanks, is that when things go wrong, they do so VERY quickly. Thus, if you have a delicate fish, and you do encounter a problem, you might have issues keeping them alive...

That is again where Nemo comes in, as most of them are tank bred, and are generally strong fish.

Alternatively, and here is a good suggestion: Set up a small little reef, with a few mushrooms, star polyps etc. Then get yourself an invert like a nice shrimp. Then, gimme a month or two three, then I can wean a Mandarin Fish for you. This means that the mandarin does not need live food, as you will be feeding frozen food. You are welcome to ask dad to bring you to me again to view my mandarins. They are excellent nano tank fish - ONLY IF THEY ARE WEANED OFF LIVE FOOD... DO NOT GET YOURSELF A MANDARIN THAT IS NOT WEANED. I will explain to you why this is when I see you again, and if you want to keep a mandarin...

On breeding... that is a whole entire topic on it's own. As many wll tell you, you actually do not want to get them breeding, trust me. The amount of work that goes into raising the fry is much more than you can even start to imagine. From the entire 3000+ members on MASA, I know of only two succesfull breeders, being able to breed on a full scale, and that is Brenda and Marcel. It really is VERY difficult.

    Good luck though...
