I posted this in another thread, but I think it is better to create a new thread. Will be a good reference for everyone!

If you import hardware (lights, pumps, etc. etc.) what will the import duties be? Is it a percentage of the price?

    What would it be on a $ 100 and $ 500 sale?

Hmmm import duties are hard to tell, there are soo many rules, best bet will be to call a courier company such as DHL and so on they can give you the exact amout, I kind you not but there are a set of books that have every single thing you can think of and what duty category they go under, These books together are bigger than the Bible I kid you not.

Most lighting carry a minimum of 10 % import duty.

Shipping is crazy, seems to work out the same amount as the thing you are buying... So you payed less than 10%.

I am a little afraid, because my brother-in-law imported a massage chair and the import duties, and shipping from the harbor to his house, ended up costing him the same as the chair itself. Could be because it was so big!

If they use DHL, do they deliver to your house?

    It depends.

Imported a water cooling kit for a PC awhile back at the valued around R3500 and my import duties were +-R1200

I've imported leds, 165 of them at the value of about $400. The Shop only labled them as $140 in value so I paid 14% on $140 and like R50 handling.

The other day I imported a complete LED fixture which should count as a light. I didn't pay R1 on this fixture in tax or duties.

    All handled by DHL.

If they open/repack your package you can expect to pay handling, usually only larger boxes.

If its classified as electronics you can get away with no duties at all.

Lighting should have a fixed duty but I have never paid this.

I think it depends on whether you parcel is passing through at lunch hour or normal working time :p

Generally when importing I ready myself for 14% vat on the item AND the shipping.

It all depend on the description of the goods and if the supplier put a tariff number on the invoice or packing slip.
