@Yuri, Does John want to come out to ZA and give a lecture or two? I am available to go and see if he is any good. He will need to arrange the air ticket though. Just kidding.

Ja it might be nice to have a new face at the next IMACSA. Give Calfo a skip this time round perhaps. Nothing wrong with Calfo though but i think most of us that attend have seen his road show a few times. my2c

Yuri, I've PM'ed you. Calvin Krog is the head organiser this year.

Keith, ROADSHOW, that´s the right word for it. He is more an entertainer, then a lecturer. My opinion.

Guys - I agree. There's a LOT of knowledgeable people in the world. South Africa most likely have the top 40% of them..... Good to things like IMACSA. BUT, I would rather have it that the PUBLIC attend shows like IMACSA, than experienced reefkeepers.....

We should rather have people like Marcel, Hennie, Steve Warren, Dennis King, etc. be speakers at "shows" at ie. "The Rand Show", or even "Pretoria Show".... ;)

Even perhaps "The Boat Show" at "The Dome".....

Many thanks, Yuri. I am sorry. But, I would really think that people like John, etc. reach far to few people, during IMACSA..... if IMACSA was aimed at the general "joe public", then they would really be able to make a point.

And if real South African Specialist reefkeepers were able to speak at ie. "The Rand Show" - then the hobby would really be able to grow in the right way.....

We - the "experienced reefkeepers" would really benefit from people like John, which you are discussing - and I think that a seperate type of "high end advanced" get-together should be arranged, for John to speak to the real specialists and experienced reefkeepers within the South African borders - who can then relay the information to he "general public" and ie. to a lot of people on MASA......

Jacques, I fear I could not disagree with you more, I think that "floater" sessions like this would only lead to more and more people setting up a "nemo" tank for their kids and killing innocent animals, or worse.

Our hobby is expensive, our avenues to buy our stock and hardware limited and not going to change in the short term, thus it is a niche hobby and unless we can breed tropical marines like goldfish and grow corals like freshwater weed, then it will go mainstream, until them, it is niche.

We have a few braveheart reefers trying to upset the balance of power held over us by the LFS's and importers and grow or import our own, but it is not tenable I am afraid unless we all band together at events like IMACSA and come up with new and innovative ways to break the stranglehold on the hobby that we are enduring w.r.t the massively high prices and limited stock. Having sessions at the "boat show" and suchlike would, in my opinion, only exascerbate the situation we find ourselves in, that being that LFS would be able to sell massively overinflated priced tanks and nemos to really stupid people who would kill their stock in a heartbeat and pack it all in within a month

My R0.02 Saffrican, not really worth much in the real world

LOL Marc! Not a single problem at all. I do not have a problem with ANYONE speaking their mind, unless they make NO sense at all! ;)

I think that I can somehow relate to what you are saying.

Only thing that I would like to "debate", is the fact that being a marine aquarist SHOULD be mainstream - not "niche"..... the more people who keep marines - the more and better the pricing would be that we would get - the more volumes that marine resellers and wholesalers would be able to sell.... the better the pricing....

THE MORE PEOPLE WHO WOULD and COULD BECOME NATURE CONSERVATIONISTS....

The better off nature would be!

I hope you can understand where I am coming from?

And having events that costs ie. R1000 per day per person - does not constitute "mainstream" - it only bolsters the "niche"......

Niche means: the less people have access to the hobby.... the less is being sold.... the more expensive the sales of individual items would be.... the more money "certain" resellers/wholesalers would make....

You follow...... That's how my mind works....
