    Hi,

I have been running an IM 24G for nearly 10 months now (slight mishap with the tank in the middle) but I am not happy with the growth under those IM lights. Been looking into alternative options. Like the Aquaillumination lights. Any experience whether one Hydra 52 would cover the tank? Think the tank is 36 inches long. I see they are bringing out a new prime light as well. Perhaps two of these would be better...

Any other suggestions would be welcomed.

    Kindest Regards

    Werner

What is the rating on the current light unit?

Those ligh units made for softies only. I have the same light unit. Its has 6 1watt leds and 4 .5 watt leds. The colour spectrum not that bad but for lps and sps will not do...

I love the look of these light units, compact and stylish. I upgraded mine to 20 watt. Changed the leds to 3 watt leds and obviously the driver for my pico tank i never got to...

I got all my components from improve living PE. Ordered the 3watt leds, heatsinsks and 220v drivers. Unfortunately i did not take any pics on the process but just google IM Skkye 20 watt mod. Only thing i didnt use is the standard heatsinkn as the leds was glued on and really hard to remove.

Think so could not remeber the site but looks familiar. Ill say very easy. If you good with DIY work ill say a 3 out of 10. I had no issues everything went smooth just had a little headache from looking into the LEDs upon testing haha

Thanks. Engineer here who has not touched a soldering iron in years... Going to be fun... Do you remember which exact LEDs you bought + driver? I found the site at least ;-) assume the 3W ones

    Appreciate your feedback.

I bought a verity of leds. UV, Aqua Blue and 10000k leds. I bought the driver doing 5 to 8 led i think, 220v driver. It fitted into the original plug. It will say on the site 3watt x the amount of leds it can handle.

Just realised I never asked the stupid question - are you happy with the lights after the mod?

Yeah sure. Its all Epistar leds thats not the best but to be honest they are pretty good and had no issues with sps at a depth of 500 without lenses... had it on the tank for about 3 weeks and nothing browned ow looked unhappy...

    Hi,

Thanks. Do you think the LED quality from a place like rapidled (butcherman imported from there) would be better?

Do you have the lights over your tank since three weeks, or for 3 weeks? If the latter, what do you have now?

    Thanks for all the help.

I know rapidled sells Bridgelux led and Cree. I upgraded to a bigger DIY unit with bridgelux leds and to be honest i see no visual difference. I used it for 3 weeks, 2 Skkye units but was not enough light for my 500 cube and i wanted to go full sps and lps. After running my new DIY unit for 1 week my sps browned a little but that was due to i think to much light all of a sudden and not acclimatising them to the new light unit...

    Hi,

thanks. I have three of the IM lights. And the 36" tank. All I want in this tank is for zoas to survive, torch coral etc and then also a BTA. That is why I was looking at the aquaillumination. Perhaps the AI Prime is still the way to go in this tank. Since it is wide, you need at least two of the bigger ones and then it is R10K minimum. Fine for a big tank but not for the nano - money wise at least. Still planning a big tank. So perhaps the DIY will bridge the gap between getting the AI primes (two times $199) and what I have now.
