hey guys, got this urchin last week, was wondering if anyone could tell me what type it is, its really pretty and all but i think i still prefer the smaller black ones with the not so long and dangerous spines:) The ones that are almost fluffy looking:p

Looks a bit like the beginnings of a Long spined Diadema urchin.

Extremely long, about 15 - 20cm's and needle sharp and when they poke you it stings like a bitch, only lasts for about 10 minutes though :p My one has nailed me plenty times :(

Is this one from a Durban rock pool? Are it's tips very sharp?

yeah tips are round, the bristle tooth tang i have bumps into it everynow and again, no problem to the fish, but wouldnt like to take the chance and get nailed. And kind of thinking of tank space too, its a pretty urchin but if its spines take up a large area of the tank, a possible non-hand friendly zone.....

If it's tips are round then it's not a long spined diadema urchin. The diadema has very sharp tips from juvenile stage.
