    Hi all

Attached is two photos of hard red growth on a live rock where it seems that it is "lifting" the zoas as it spreads. Earlier the week I reached in an scratched it with my finger nail and it is hard and coarse.

It is spreading but very slowly. probably been there for at least a month or two but is only now staring to worry me as it is getting bigger.

Anybody know what it is? Is this something I should worry about? Course of action?

Looks like a type of sponge.
Very strong growers in the right conditions.
Is it on a removeable rock? If so, you can remove the rock, & scrape it off.

Looks more like a stony coral to me.

Difficult to say... Might be, but don't see any polyps of sort...

I think you might be right Visser. Saw a few pics on google that looks similar. I have also not seen any polyps on it.

From other sources on the internet it seems that sponges growing in an aquarium is alright, especially for filtration. Did see some mentioning it can overtake and kill coral colonies (eg. zoas).

In the meanwhile I'll just keep an eye on it and if it gets out of control and overtakes the zoas "chop it off".

    Thanks guys.
