    Hi guys,

Feels like ages ago when I decided I wanted to setup a marine tank again. Unfortunately due to circumstances, this was not possible till now. So with great joy I can now say: I am finally setting up my tank.

    I purchased the following equipment:
200 liter cubicle in wooden cabinet. (600x600c600 excluding extra internal sump filter)
Internal and external sump filter system.
    Red Sea Prism protein skimmer.
Coral lighting plus two lights in the sump area.
    2 x 1000 liter/hour pumps.
Intermittent switch that runs 2 x wave pumps.

I got it all setup and purchased some black aragolife for the sump and display tank.

Got some base rock and a few pieces of live rock in as well.

    Been cycling for a while.

I put in two clowns today as well and saw a small black snail made its way probably via the live rock. :)

I'll post some more pics tomorrow.

    Hi all,

    Just an update:

Had issues with heating and the temp went up to 30C. (current heat-wave). I left the heater off, but did not make a difference.

So I modified the canopy to incorporate 4 x 120mm fans. 2x airflow in and 2x airflow out. Will post pics later this evening.

I am pleased to say that this is cooling the water down to 26C. Evaporation is more now, but it is to be expected.

Since my last post I added the following:
    1 x tomato clown.
    1 x cleaner shrimp
    1 x red hermit crab
    1 x blue hermit crab

All the chemical levels seems to be stable and in order as well. Will get another couple of pieces of live rock to complete the structure this week. Thinking perhaps the blue Fiji ones.

    Will keep you guys updated.

    hello there.

How many days is this tank up and running? And you already have critters in there. Please slow down.
Adding more live rock, you most likely will cause another cycle.

In that case, I'd rather keep things as they are now for a while before adding anything else. Just to get everything settled now. Thanks Riaan.

It's been running for just about two weeks. I must confess, I used NSW and added Bene-Bacter (got it from the friend I bought the tank from) initially plus Triple-buffer from Tropic Marin to equalize the kH and pH levels after the first week.

    Bene-Bacter from Aquatic Remedies:
Seven species of concept beneficial bacterial concentrates for marine aquarium. Quickly mature new tank water. Reduce and eliminate nitrite, nitrate, ammonia. Reduces water change. Remove unwanted odor from water.

But, I am holding off on any additions for now, will concentrate on getting a RO unit first.

    Hi guys,

Just thought I'd give an update. I just tested the water and it yielded the following results:

    SG: 1.024
    kH: 9
    NO3: 0-5
    NO2: 0
    NH4: 0
    pH: 8.5
    Ca: 340

Afterwards did a 25ltr water change, as the tank has been running for two weeks.
Mixed and added triple-buffer to the water as well.

There is starting a slight brownish look in the tank, which I think is normal, right?

Oh yes, wanted to ask if it would be ok to add more live rock to the tank over the weekend?

Bud your Ca level is a little low for a DKH of 9 and pH of 8.5. The Ca should be 420 - 430 for a reef tank if you have dKH and pH values you state. The reason why your Ca is low is most likely due to the Ca precipitating out of solution when you added the triple buffer.

I would stop the triple buffer dosing and let the dKH drop to about 6 then add a balanced calcium to bring the Ca up to about 400. Then slowly dose triple buffer again to lift the dKH to about 8-9.

But before you go doing all this get a second test on the Ca to make sure it is 340.

Always remember to do corrections slowly.

All your LR should have been added at the same time to cure. However if the LR is already cured there should be no reason why not to add LR. If the LR is not cured, ask the LFS to keep it in a tank for you for 2 weeks or so before ou take it and add to your tank.

Another option is to use the Bali dry rock that is the rave of late. It comes in some nice shapes. @Alan has some in his tank. Check out his thread. " Alan's poison"
