guys we are seeing more and more hybrid/ cross bred fish harvested from the wild these days, have they always occurred and are just being brought to our attention now because they are classed as rare and expensive fish or are they becoming more frequent as a result of climate change?

EG: species traveling out of their terratories due to ocean current and temperature changes and now mating with other simular species/

i know Centropyge shepardi i has always been around and a hybrid of a coral beauty and a rusty angel. (i stand to correction @Yuri) but we are seeing more and more trade of unusual fish

    what is the reason?

Les I doubt if climate change would be an influencing factor (interesting train of thought though), I recon its because the demand is increasing for "special / unusual " specimens

    Agree with Frans.
Could also be due to over-fishing so collectors are starting to move into new areas, deeper waters etc to find fish.

for sure, but we are finding hybrid/mix breed fish advertised almost every month now, very unusual? i wonder if they just left them in the past as they thought they were deformed? as a diver i wouldent have.. i like rare things :)

sure. good point... and probably more people entering the industry so more eyes out there = more rare finds..

in the last year i have seen some weird fish. (not sure if all were caught or some bred to be honest) but to name a few, tricolour yellow tangs, lemonpeel hybrid, white yellow tang, and the latest this mixed coral beauty..

a rusty and coral beauty look fairly similar to begin with. Shops could be labelling simple colour morphs as hybrids to give the illusion of a rare fish so that they can push the price up.

not all hybrids are pretty i will admit, but some people thrive on these types of fish no matter what their appearance..

i personally have always looked for perfectly "colored" specemins..

Hybrids normally occur when there is a lot of the close relative and small amounts of a other
Ex. Black tang and scopas tang
    Both are zebrasoma sp
There are small amounts of the rostratum and big amounts of scopas

    C.Shepardi is not a hybrid !!!
A friend I have know the professor that found the new angel Centropyge deboraie
That professor made DNA tests on the C Shepardi angels it is a true fish species

The rusty x flame hybrid do look a lot the same

The reason I think we see more of them is
In the old days the fish collectors/exporters was thinking it is not a perfect looking fish
Sum of the rarest hybrids in the early days of fish keeping was sold for almost nothing

Ex there has only been found 2 Paracentropyge venustus x multifasciata the first one was sold in Japan for almost nothing

The other thing is there is now a big market for hybrids !
So now thy are started to get dived out

There are also aberrant fish like the white yellow tangs
Thy normally change back there colors in a tank
There color is diet related most of the time

some interesting info there Yuri :) definatley makes sence.. so hybrids have always been around but were seen as deformities due to their imperfections and have only really now surfaced due to demand..
