Hunt for shark after attack

Hi guys!

Interesting topic.

As a shark fisherman and surfer in falsebay I dont really think the sharks frequent swimming beaches more than they use too. There are just more eyes to spot them these days thus there are more and more sightings. Also I have not heard of any attacks by sharks other than Great whites and bull/zambezi sharks of late here in SA. Normally its the smaller ones/juveniles just being curious and as everyone knows their little feel/bumb to us is normally fatal. Its a pity though cause they only wanna come say howzit and play a bit with us. (think of a little puppy, always playfull and just wanna make mischief). Most of the attacking sharks are in the 2-3m range which is mere babies, thus inexperiemced!

About the shark cage diving, I really think this helps the attack statistics along although there is no proof of it. The sharks associate humans with the nice chum smell in the water around the cages, but cant get too you. Then at a other venue eg. beaches they see you and remember the smell from cage diving and come and bump/feel you only to realize you taste like horse instead of choclate, but then its too late and the damage done.

THis is only my 2c.

johan you make sence there.. there have ben alot of beach goers at spots that are less frequented down here and there have been alot of sightings in a very short space of time making this theory plausable..

as for the cage diving, im not for it but would love to experience it at least once to see such an animal up close..

i have seen them from my surfboard and believe me the appeal is not the same...

the mystery of it all keeps will keep us debating for a long time still.. :)

a tasty Scooby snack
Been watching a bit too much Cartoon Network me thinks :whistling:

Why is there always such an uproar whenever there is a shark attack, by going into the sea you are entering a hostile environment where the shark is the ultimate predator in HIS domain, expect to be attacked, you are invading his home.

Just like walking across the N3 at lunchtime, you're not supposed to be there so expect something bad to happen to you.

The ensuing manhunt for this creature is just ridiculous. Why the urge to kill it, why, what the hell is that going to solve?

Guys. Sorry I have not been able to post till now. I am still not well. Still in bed. Dr thinks I have the swine flu....

I absolutely adore sharks. Just the past December I was able to do a dive at Protea Banks, where there was more than 100 sharks around us.

I dived with sharks in both the 2 large public aquariums..... and also did the white shark cage dive thing....... absolutely mindblowing and humbling experiences.....

I have also probably seen every single shark documentary made.....

Sharks are really just like large dogs....
As Bossie says......

And, unfortunately, us humans are really the intruders in their domain.....
Sharks really just want to get to know us too.

It has been proven that sharks do NOT like human meat, nor do they like human blood....

Sharks are curious - and they are being conditioned BY HUMANS that humans are equivalent to their natural food - fish......

Humans are not, and never will be part of the natural diet of sharks...... our bodies will never supply the nutrients that sharks require......

It is really sad that this has happened - as once again - this gives the sharks a "bad reputation".......

Everyone always just wanna kill shark and I cant understand why?

Do people get out of their car in the kruger and then get torn up by loin, do they then also go and try to kill every lion in sight?? NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

I love sharks and specifically the great whites!! Absolute awesome creatures and its sad that poeple make up all these horrible stories that they are bad!!!!

Killing sharks wont help any cause!!!

Its simple, if dont wanna get bitten dont go swim in the sea, as viper said. If you do make sure your story with man in the heavens are sorted, but chances are slim to nothing that you will be the next shark attack victim! You are more likely to die from a coconut falling on your head or a car accident!

Sorry for rabmling on so much! :(

I absolutely agree with you viper....its not going to solve jack****

i dont believe in killing any animals. but i do. while fishing, hunting even the odd mozzie if i can find it. let me get to the point. i think they should take the whites off the black list and allow them to be hunted like all other sharks. i might be wrong, but i think you allowed to catch one shark per day. this should apply for the whites as well. you can take 8 crayfish but cant hunt 1 white? i dunno .. anyway, as i said im not pro killing, i love sharks and i even have my "SHARK!" shouting voice aced when i surf Nahoon Reef:)

Why on earth would you want to hunt a great white? There is a reason why they are on the endangered list...

bruce white sharks are slower breeders (reproductive frequency is unknown but estimated to be 20 times in this animals lifetime of an estimated 100 years) so to compare it to crayfish is a litttle unfair but i do see what you are saying..

i like the idea of them suggesting tracking devices to track the sharks wherabouts and sound an alert if it were to be appraching a beach etc. of course you couldent tag everyone but there are jobs to be created out of this if we look to the positive side..

good one les, imagine the costs of running something like that.. eish..

well the shark sure doesnt seem to be THAT endangered.. they popping up everywhere:)

im pro shark.. im just putting it out there

They were here millions of years before we were even monkeys swinging in trees (some of us still do!!:whistling:) and should be here millions of years when we are gone!!! unless we kill them first! ... You should only ever kill something if you gonna eat it! hunting sharks is pathetic!!!!! I know when we fish we call them the "taxman" etc but the sea belongs to them, we are only visitors!

they do seem to be everywhere atm, im not going to lie im anti surfing latley.. and i love surfing, if i think of how many times i have surfed the reef on my own with nobody around not to mention out yesslow and seavale way.. its definatley not the right time to be veturing far from a hospital.

Ummm nah, its a fantastic shooter I discovered at a dodgy bar in San Fransisco ;)

Bossi they actually do. I recall once I was in Kruger at Punda and those deurloopers got scnacked.... they shot the entire pride that had the Punda Maria territory... :(

imagine beeing happed by 300 of these guys!! ouch!!!

I just love GREAT WHITES!!

Been following this thread and most points made are more than valid (explain that to beach goers , authorities etc :p)

My biggest question is, IF you catch the GW, how do you know it is "that one'...does it carry an ID or something.

Us people are ridiculous at times , as mentioned we put ourselves in harms way and believe we are safe as we are in a vehicle, there is a ranger with a gun etc. We jump into the ocean and believe 'cuase we cant see them they not there...so no harm.

I would place a bet that if you were swimming on almost any beach in SA (especially unprotected) and would be able to see top down you would be sharing the pool with a few dangerous critters :p

My 2C

a friend of mine who flies helicopters was coming back from a rescue/recovery from kei mouth to east london.. he saw a massive shark less than 20m away from 2 surfers out at nahoon reef.. now i surf a fair amount and talk to people daily who surf the break almost everyday and i never even heard anything of any of the 2 surfers seeing this shark so its vert scary to know that it was there and was unseen.

the same as umglanjana (breezy point) in the kei.. there is a massive shark there yet because of it being one of the best surf spots in the world this fact is ignored..

Agreed. In Aus, more people die from box jellyfish sting than GW attacks, but you dont see the Aus Military flying over the waters with miniguns and just blasting the crap out the jellies!!!

If a Great White would ever be so lucky as to sit "fin" in my livingroom uninvited, I would also kill it, so that's why I keep my skinny white ass out of his livingroom.

Kneeheight is deep enough for me thank you. If God wanted me to swim, my name would be Nemo.

Just heard on the radio that a shark was spotted at muizenberg about 100m from the shore.

Then why don't we hunt and kill tigers, lions, crocodiles, hippos etc.
It's exactly the same concept. I am in no way part of the bunny brigade, but the average human being just does not understand the delicate state of equilibrium that is needed in nature and as someone mentioned before, the knock-on effects of killing the GW could be devastating!!!
