While there is nothing wrong with a nano saltwater tank, if you’re a reef junkie, you’re very likely want to upgrade…quickly. And upgrade in true reef junkie style is what one of my VIP clients did. Not only did he upgrade, he went over the top by having me plan and construct his whole tank.

His build included taking over part of his garage, putting holes in walls…i.e. re-arranging his life around his fish tank.

And then you have the problem like a couple of guys I know living in Little Falls.
They had a custom tank build that is roughly 2,5mx2,5mx2m with a special room built on for this monster plus sumps, frag tanks, its own generator and all the rest.

Water changes costs them about R20k every month on salt.
Trace minerals cost them about R15k a month.
And they cannot go on holiday as the tank has taken over their lives and becomes a full time job.

The idea is to have this as a hobby that can easily be maintained whilst going away on holiday, not creating a monster for yourself that demands your attention every day taking over your life and draining your money.

Fishies are nice and a good idea but should be kept to manageable standards that dont drain your social life and pocket.

Did they change water with gold dust once a week ??
At 1000 rand a bucket, and 700 litres per bucketyou can do a 20% water change @ R4000 a month which will be more than enough on such large tank.

If you are really interested, then I will get the dimensions of the tank for you.
The main tank volume is something like 6000 or 7000 litres.
Then they still have a sump of about 2000l and loads of frag tanks, quarantine tanks and all sort linked to the system.

When they want to move coral they go and scuba dive in the tank.

Irrespective of cost, the tank on its own is a full time job.
Kinda changes from a hobby to one massive chore..... and money pit.

So "At 1000 rand a bucket, and 700 litres per bucketyou can do a 20% water change @ R4000"
If each bucket makes 700l and costs a R1000 and you want to do a water change on this volume of about 12000 at 20% it is still 2400l every week.
    So R1000 x 4 buckets a week is R4000 on salt x 4 = R16000.00 a month on salt.

Yes, but why do weekly changes on such a large tank ? With the right filtration, I would do a 50% wc like once in three months, pending nitrate test results ofcourse.

Not my tank so you are asking the wrong person.
Simply telling you what they do.
