I have an open top tank, 550 Liters. Metal stand with sump of 120 Liters. Parameters good, but a fish odor lingering. Any ideas on getting rid of the smell?

You can take 500-700grams of carbon, put it in a stocking and under your overflow pipe or somewhere with nice flow. If you have a reactor you can use that as well. Replace about every 3 weeks

Nope you can keep running it. Helps with chemicals and smell.

i have an open top tank, and sump etc, you shouldnt be smelling fish at all...
thats a by product from biological action, not your skimate you are smelling?

you can place some vinegar in a bowl and add a teaspoon of bicarb and leave in the room, it removes smells

why do you have a fishy smell? Oh, I mean the tank? What is your water parameters?

Carbon will help. I would put it in a reactor, with feeding pump in the very last chamber of the sump. That would lessen the detritus trapped inside helping the carbon to last longer. No point in having a blocked up reactor after a week. The carbon pieces should not tumble around inside the reactor at all. else they will break up each other releasing small pieces out of the reactor into your tank. Due to the low flow through it, it blocks up easily with detritus.

Other method is to just use a filter sock and hang the carbon in that in the last chamber. Not as effective, but it does still work.

Have you counted your fish ? Is everybody still there ? If missing it could be that there is something behind your tank that jumped out of inside the overflow. I would do a head count first to see who is missing...

ATI is good, but you dont want to fluidise the carbon to much in the reator, it must not tumble and have slow through put
