I think it would be just as important, your skimmer is one of your main filtration if not the main filtration in a tank.

In a fish only tank we tend to overstock, thus a skimmer would be very important. If you don't overstock then it wouldn't be that important as nitrates don't affect fish as badly as they do corals, but then algae would become a problem...

And predators produce even more waste.

True, was skim reading the two posts :). Never even read about the predator part, if you going to go predator part then a skimmer is high on the list IMHO.

I ran my FOWLR tank skimmerless for one month when my pump broke down. Nothing serious happened to my fishes.(i guess);)

Dean a skimmer is very important in all marine aquaria where one cannot be fitted more than average frequencys of water changes are recomended.. but reef tanks generally need skimming due to chemical warfare from toxins being produced and secreted due to competition for space to grow and FOWLR systems nore because of the messy nature of the fish being kept.. predator systems would probably need to have a slightly bigger skimmer owing to them eating predominantly live foods.etc etc..

toppdog, having always kept preds (Lions, Triggers Eels etc) I will not recommend a "skimmerless" tank. These guys not only consume high protien foods but also produce large amounts of waste leading to all kinds of problems.

And agreed with Les...overskimming is much better in this setup
