I bought a Sun Sun 1.2m light pendant with 2 x 150W MH and 2 x 54W T5 tubes. It has to go over a 1220 X 450 X 460 tank and I have to build a bracket to hang the pendant from so I need to know what is the minimum hight above the tank that the pendant can be and what is the ideal hight?

Around 20-30 cm should do the trick

T5 you want close. MH you want a bit further away. Not only will MH heat up the water a lot when too close, but you can also break the protective cover glass when a fish decides to splatter your lights. A T5 will just get some nice extra salt creep leading to that shocking feeling in about a month or 2.

What bothers me os the distens between the MH. I'm used to T5 wich gives a even light acros the tank where this has got onley 2 MH and 2 blue T5. Will this not also give 2 spots with very high light and dark spots inbetween and on the sides?

Best is to have your rock scaping then as 2 pinnacles under each light.

The spread is quite a lot, so play with the height until the dark spot in between is not an issue.

So what you are telling me is to make the bracket as high as posible and then trial and eror as to how high the end result.
