Install a gatevalve on the overflow pipe on the return, worked for both my nano's ;-)

No, you can limit it a bit so it builds up in the slimline a bit as opposed to just gushing out. It looks like the vales on bigger skimmers.

have one of those... do i need to restrict the flow a little bit....when i do that though the water in the slim compartment varies as my 2 vortech are on reef crest so flow changing all the time...must i still restrict the flow... also dont want my sump level to vary as it makes my skimmer going mad

    thanks for the help

Yes close it a little bit at a time untill it becomes completely silent.

The only way to make any overflow silent is to fill it up or buffer it a bit so the water drop is a shorter and so makes less noise when it falls.

Does your overflow fill up to some point or does the water just fall down to the bottom making a splashing sound?

I tuned my tanks with these vales to get the water to about 2/3rd's of the way up the slimline and they were dead quiet.

One thing to keep in mind though is that you do not sacrifice water rotation between sump and display. So if you have a requirement to have 5x (h) the flow of your total volume do not go and reduce that flow just to make it quiet, you will just ruin the rest of the tank :)

Example: I had a 100L total system and wanted a factor 10x flow so I popped in a 1000L/h pump and all was well except for the drop noise as my overflow was a bit bigger than the tank required. So rather than getting a bigger pump to fill up the overflow quicker I just installed a gate valve retaining my desired 10x flow rating and retaining my sanity :)

the reason why I would recommend a gate valve as opposed to a ball valve is the precision that you get to tune things to. In my Nano a ball valve is a on-off thing as it is simply not precise enough.

    Any ways, I'm rambling here...

@SApicoreef if you do not have braces on the tank you can cut some eggcrate to size and slide that into the overflow put a cable tie on the top part so that you can lift the eggcrate out for cleaning purposes that must be done

@SApicoreef I've been looking for these PVC gate valves but none of the suppliers I've spoken to seem to stock them (they only seem to keep the standard ball valve fittings). Any idea where I can get these gate valves in KZN, preferably in Pietermaritzburg?
