the ceramic rings are used for chemical filtration by growing beneficial bacterial on their highly porous surface.. a bit like live rock, therefore you don't really want to wash them with hot water or something like that because that will kill the bacteria inside them which can cause more problems for your system once you put them back. I would say the best way is to rinse them with tank water in a bucket just to remove the excess dirt that might be collected. or take about two thirds of them out and replace them with new rings. if you do that make sure y u mix the old and new rings very well and the bacteria should spread to the new rings and start cleaning your water quite fast.

first, switch off your return pump
Then with your water change partially done, put some of the old water in a bucket. Lift and move the ceramic rings over in the bucket. Siphon the chamber the rings were in clean. That water removed is part of your water change. Fill up the tank with new water so that the empty chamber fills up again. Replace the ceramic rings. Switch return pump on. If you cleaned the chamber properly you should have no rubbish blown into your display

Reason why you rather overflow into the chamber than to fill it directly with new water is so that any temperature or PH difference between new water and tank water does not impact the bacteria on the rings.

Just wash it off in old tank water & put it back. That's it. Short & sweet.

    short and sweet,
    BUT
do not get the settlement under the rings into your system. Ensure that chamber is isolated while you get rid of all the green pea soup

my son has rings in his nano, every now n again when doing a water change we remove the rings into the already siphoned water n give em a gentle 'shake' to remove excess detritus. we then siphon out the 'rubbish' from that chamber of the sump, replace the rings n finish the water change..
imho 'cleaning' the rings (iow, removing the bacteria) would be very bad n create an imbalance in your tank due to the loss of a filtration media.`

    Hi.

I am not a fan of any ceramic rings or bioballs. I feel one should only use life rock for this purpose. There is not artificial material that can beat life rock as a filter material.
