Hi guys I m struggling with high phosphate.

Could a shrinking leather coral increase the phosphate levels?

    not really, whats high?

causes are overfeeding, leaching from rocks, leaching from gravel, and detritus in the tank and sump

well the best test is to take a rock and soak in RO water and test phos of that water after 24hrs.
    also test your RO

    PO4 is coming from somewhere
have you checked with another test kit? take it to a lfs for a test...

you can run some cheato in your sump or use bio cubes etc

As for the detritus I have been vacuuming my rocks the last few weeks and blowing them out with a big pump to remove cayno from my tank and I have. No sand in my sump.

Tanks @dallasg I have not tested it against another test kit but will make the time to take it to the LFS.

@dallasg I am running some macro algae in my sump.
The buggiest shortcoming in my tank is its owners lack of experience.
Would be great if some of you "gurus" could come and give some advice.

@Barend... I have the same issue in my RSM 250 and done several WC. I'm also not over feeding.

Please keep me posted regarding the Phos and whether you managed to reduce it.

I'm using orca cubes (with airstone) and pellets in a reactor.

    What do mean by clean?
If you have some detritus settlement on the substrate, you can carefully siphon it off, but other than that, I would leave the DSB in peace.

If you siphon the deep sand bed, it won’t help much with the phosphorus issue you have, but if you do, be careful and make sure the water as you siphon from the bed is thrown away, Persoanly I would regularly siphon the bed at a rate of no disturbance to the beds surface,if I had one the way you have. The bed helps make phosphorus and removes a little as well, a part from nitrate reduction, that is its part of the bio system.

For how long has the DSB been running?

It does look as if you have some settlement on your DSB, but the pic's can be misleading.

Try to get another hobbyist in your area to come and have a look at your system, just for a different opinion to your view ;)
