Welcome Uncle Bob. Best advice it to ask questions first and then go break the bank.

A VERY WARM WELCOME to MASA, Uncle Bob! Great to have you on-board!

OK - the ABSOLUTE FIRST place you should start, is right here on MASA! Great that you have joined BEFORE you went out to purchase anything.

Keeping marines is really a GREAT HOBBY! Very addictive - and your knowledge levels tend to shoot through the roof, as there is quite a vertical learning curve!

The MOST important thing in keeping marines, is PATIENCE! You require a HUGE amount of this. As one can NEVER rush nature. One cannot rush the sea, nor the coral reefs. So - it is not even WORTH trying to rush things in trying to set up a marine tank.

I would like to suggest that you browse as much through our forum, reading as many threads as you can. Many people started out like you - not knowing ANYTHING. They ended up with some of the most awesome marine tanks, because they followed the guidance of the members on MASA.

Please read as much as possible up, on keeping marines.
There is some contradicting information out there, on the internet, and a LOT of beliefs.
There are many ways of doings things, but, I have personally found, that, in the end, there is only ONE true way, of having a "bullet-proof reef", and be very successful at keeping marine pets alive and flourishing.

Please read through the URL link in my signature. This should give you a very good starting point. That you can start asking questions, and learning.

Please ask as MANY questions as it takes, for you to become a successful reefkeeper! There is no such thing as a "stupid question".

Also - please try and identify a goal that you would like to achieve - and then let us assist you in obtaining/achieving that goal.

Good luck with this journey into the marine world! This hobby is absolutely amazing, and addictive! Enjoy!

    hello uncle super noob :)

great to have you join MASA, its a excelent place to start your education in the wonders of a reef set up:)

do you have a tank yet? do you know what sort of tank you would like to create? do you know what part of a reef really grabs your attention and do you have a budget to work towards?

have a look through those questions as they will greatly help you in defining what sized tank would suit your intrests and what sort of equipment you would need to help certain marine creatchures survive.

There is a huge amount to learn and many take ages to really grasp the finer details of the basic principles. So take your time in the planning stage, ask lots of questions and we will help you all we can in setting up right from the start :)

    welcome and happy postings :)
