    Hello fellow fish keepers,

I am new to the community and new to Marine Keeping.
I have not officially started with the salt water thing yet but I will soon.
If you have any interesting Tips, Tricks and/or Facts for me to start with that would be great. Any Warnings or don't do's for a fresh new tank will be appreciated.

I have had success in the past with my Tropical tank until I decided a while ago to get something other than the usual Amazonian fish, So I went Malawian. BIG Mistake, I have not seen the end of issues for a while now. So I give up I am over fresh water fish and their issues, African fish are crazy. It's time for me to go for Marine tank.:yeahdude:

welcome to masa:) great to hear you want to start out in marines, the more you learn now before getting your fingers wet, the easier things are to controll later on as you will have a better understanding of things. Read lots on masa, its a great site with a wealth of info to keep you busy.

Thanxx guys... Hope I make my way without killing anything.

I found this yesterday on the blog and I was just wondering if this is a good way of starting up my tank once I find one.

What would you guys say is a good size for a beginner?
Also what kind of animals should I start with to create environment for clowns?

OK so I have been busy for 2 days trying to figure out what I need to start with and I came up with this.

List of things I might need:

-An Aquarium and a Stand (I'm aiming for a 150L to 200L Deep tank).
-Aragonite Substrate (Live Sand + small sand + rough sand).
    -Dry Rock and/or Live Rock.
    -RO/DI Unit (Reverse Osmosis filter).
-Salt Mix (Stuff you buy in buckets).
    -Heater or 4.
    -Thermometer.
    -Hydrometer (For water density).
-Power heads (Water Pumps + Wave Makers, for random water flow).
-Test Kits (for Salt-water use) Like 10 of these things. Ammonia, Nitrate, Calcium etc...
-Salt water Mixing Buckets (Brand new and only used for salt water)
-Reef Grade Lights (OOOOO Well this is a whole subject on it's own, complicated)
    -Sump + accessories (Bio-filtration tank)
    -Return Pump
    -Overflow in tank
    -PVC Piping (plumbing)
-Protein Skimmer ( Not sure if I need this but it would seem I do).
-Time, Money, Patience and a love for the aquatics.

    Is this about right?

@ Red Pepper- They eat each other, I originally had 2 Talking catfish and they where really happy and healthy for nearly 4 years, Then I decided to get some Malawi's so I bought 2 Malawi's and one Pleco and they started fighting like crazy after about 2 days in the tank. This caused to much stress and my catfish died. So I separated,I put one in to a breeding tank and took it back to the pet store after it got all it's fins back. I then went to exchange one of them for a different Malawi and this little guy nearly killed everything else in the tank including my Pleco, so again I separated them. This is where I am at the moment. I will just wait for the other Malawi to grow it's fins back and go ask the pet store to exchange both for me if they don't mind me bringing them back again. I will get some tiny Oscars or Parrots instead. If I can find ones half the size of my injured Pleco, but only when he is healthy and happy again.

    Hi RFSwanepoel

It very important for you to get a protein skimmer, and always get one bigger than you need. I would say for your system you can get a TS2, but if the price is to high for you, you can still get away with a TS1.

Ok got my answer. Imperative that you get a very good relationship with a LFS.
I am a newbee in saltwater, so talk from the experience of converting from FW to SW. Kept FW for 30 plus years before taking the step, the last 20 years with Malawi and Tanganyika fish. I advised many people on what Malawi fish to get, yet they did not listen, they bought what they liked and it always ended in tears because of compatibility issues. Malawi's are easy if you get combatibility right!
In SW there are as many compatibility issues if not more. Make sure that you read plenty on MASA before you buy. Work out a fish list, find out upfront about combat-ability issues either from this forum, or a reputable LFS, I suggest probably anyone of the MASA sponsors who are reputable, the closer the better. Impulsive buys are dangerous so take all advice given, an ask every question possible.

I am only 8 months into the SW set-up, its been an amazing journey so far. The best advice I can give is read, read, read and listen even more.

    Thanx Pepper.

I originally bought 2 Acei's but they could not even live together.
Then I got a Red Zebra in the hopes that this might work BUT NO Red is probably a bad sign
