Hi there, welcome to MASA. I suggest you read the article on starting a marine tank - below in my signature. It will give you an idea on lights, filtration, the nitrogen cycle, etc. It is valuable info you need as a newbie - enjoy as it's a nice read ;)

Oops, forgot. Like most things in life, you get what you pay for. So if you want a cheap hydrometer, it will not be very accurate to measure the SG. But if you fork out a few hundred(R500 - R900 depending on make), you will get a nice and accurate refractometer. Same with salt. Although sometimes the sponsors have nice specials where they sell decent salt very cheap.

What hydrometer are you bying for that price? Didn't you mean refractometer? I saw hydrometers for less than a R100.
Also the salt - what size bag or bucket are you refering to? Seachem which is relatively cheap, is R700 a 20kg bucket.

    Hello and welcome to masa.

I'm also a newbie and one thing I can tell you is read as much as you can on the forum before you even think of going to buy anything. Iv been reading since november and only got my tank to start cycling yesterday cause I wanted to make sure I knew as much as I could before I started. What I realised is there is so much to learn and it helped me a lot by reading to decide on what I wanted in a tank and has saved me a lot of money cause I would have bought the wrong stuff if I hadn't read.

So in the long story that I just wrote the moral of the story is DO YOUR RESEARCH.

Ps iv also had fresh water tanks for over 5 years and I still knew nothing about salt.
