    I'm new to this forum

I joined this forum after seeing how much information is available and how fast questions my friends have asked have been answer

I have been in this hobby for a wile and know a fair amount buy still have allot to learn.
I hope i can help people prevent all the costly mistakes iv made, and hopefully you guys can help me as well.

I started this hobby in 2011 and stopped in 2013 after a white spot outbreak decimated my tank (i guess that's what you get for skipping quarantine)
And as all of you know how expensive this hobby can be it cut my dreams of a reef thank short right there after running out of money.

I am about to start my tank up again today

And this time it will be to stay.

@IamVendetta Welcome to the forum, I wish you like this time round. Just do what everyone here knows, but every now and again fail to do. Be patient and take it slow! :m106:

Get a small piece of liverock out the bottom of the LFS rock holding tank. That rock will help in seeding your dead rock with new lifeforms.

I understand where you are coming from RiannP but i feel like that would still introduce all the piggybacks to the tank i am trying to avoid:m85: do you have any other ideas or thoughts on the topic?

Just inspect the rock carefully. What's the worst you could get?

I agree with lfs rock, a few small ones that are easily viewable with no deep crannies, dip it in coralx or such like, hang it in the tank from a breeder container and observe for a day or two especially late at night.

Otherwise put some live sand in, easier to inspect for baddies. Will have the bacteria but not any critters.

I started my tank in this manner (only using base rock). To add bacteria to the tank I used the skimmate from my other tank as well as water from the water change to the new tank. You will get pods and coralline etc from frags that you put in your tank. It will take time to seed your tank with other hitchhikers in this manner but you do manage to avoid most of the nasties (big bonus points if you quarantine the corals before adding as it defeats the purpose of going this route without using a quarantine).

I just came up withe the idea about placing a piece of live rock in a filter sock and putting it in my sump.
I'm just curios if come backpackers are small enough to make it threw the filter sock. i would really like to keep those tiny white feather duster(not sure what they called) out my tank i know they are harmless but at the same time they are ugly to look at and get annoying. Are there any other backpackers i should look out for and that could maybe make it threw the filter sock?
    Any Advice will be appreciated:)

Hey. Ive been keeping marines for some time now...and really no matter what you do...you always get some hitchhikers...youll buy corals...they come with rock that will be full of live...so unless you plan on placing everything in a qt and or cutting all coral off the rocks they come on...you eventually end up with all kinds of things in your tank...you can get fish species that will eat the feather dusters you dont like....you can also dip everything you get....which is always a good idea...however ive dipped stuff in all out...and still noticed creatures alive after the dip...
