    Hiya all

Ta for welcoming me to MASA :1:

I'm new to marine aquariums, been keen on getting a tank setup for the last 6 months or so. Haven't been able to afford it yet, so just been researching like a crazy man ;)

There is so much to learn in this hobby it could be a university degree :)

Anyway, planning on getting a tank this xmas, so been budgeting and planning for it.

    Oh, my names Daniel

Welcome Daniel. I'm glad you're researching beforehand which probably will save a lot of money in the long run

welcome to MASA, nice to hear u researching
its not as expensive as it seems if things are done correctly...

tell us your goals and what you plan to achieve and we can offer the best advice..

ideally the 2 items you going to need and buy well the first time is a skimmer and lighting, then followed by a nice tank and sump...
but feel free to ask away, where abouts in SA are u?

Heya, I'm in CT. I actually just got some ideas on prices, looking at a budget of 7.5k max - thats like including live rock and sand, a stand - everything except small things like nets, buckets etc, salt etc. I'm also managing to borrow test kits from my friend for the first few months, thankfully :p

The dimentions I had planned so is 100cmx38.1x50.8 (39.3"x15"x20"). The light unit standard length I wanna get is 1m. So thats 51 gallons.I really don't want to go ANY bigger than that, was gonna actually start smaller but read that the bigger the easier it is to keep.

Otherwise, the skimmer i was planning on getting was the BH-100 ReefOctapus hang-on one. Wow its quite pricey hehe. R1600 odd. Then I also gonna use a canistar or wet/dry trickle filter with that, but not sure if thats a good choice?

When it comes the actual tank, is acrylic a lot better to get than glass and is it also more expensive? Also since its gonna be open top, i'm freaked out about fish jumping/crawling out so can I just get it build so i can have a piece of glass/acrylic on top? Do I then need to get a little latch sorted out for feeding reasons?

Anyway, thats the basic idea, hope its all works out :whistling:

Edit: Btw its great to be part of the MASA community :)

cooo, nice tank size, i would go with glass, sounds all good, if you wanted smaller one can get a Boyu 550 nano

as for this lid no real need, but one can make a wood or perspek canopy to stop it.
thats a nice skimmer, you might find some nice equip for sale here on the forums

I saw a i think was a 100cm or 1200cm tank made from 8mm glass and a over flow for about R600 and the stand for about R400 but you can save bucks by building a better stand yourself. The tank is a exotic reef.
As for a skimmer Sams had a reeftec rated for my 1200cm tank going for R1400 and his t5 lights are the cheapest that i know of.

cool, thanks. I would like to go glass, the only thing bothering me is about it cracking, but I have no idea if that's common or nothing to really be worried about?

kick ass :) Actually I went to sams with a friend Saturday and He had a quite a nice display set up with a BH-100. Its very similar to the kind of setup I'm looking for but on a smaller scale cause that was 1200cm and taller and wider. In fact I'm trying to get my phone working on my pc to post a pic of it, cause I wanna get a similar type stand.

I know u guys are crazy about photos :yeahdude: Sorry about the bad quality, getting a new phone soon, still got the samsung d600 ;)

Thats just the basic idea for the stand, except keen to get it done in black. The canistor/wet dry filter is in the left comparnment with the BH-200 handing on the back of the tank.

I'm not too good with my fish knowledge yet, I think a sailfin might be in there.
