    Hi Manny,

    Welcome to Masa!

You will probably find out soon enough that you will not get many responses not mentioning pics... So start sharing details! What type of system you have, type of stock you will keep, etc.

When in doubt, ask! Plenty of people on this forum who have loads of experience, and are more than willing to help out.

My your reefing years be many!

    Cheers!

    Carla

And a happy festive season to you.

    Thanks for all the welcomes!

The system running is a red sea max 250, i have attached a Hailea chiller - 250 A, and an external cascade filter.

    Here are the pics!

I see you have a fish in the tank, you said that the tank has only been running for 3 days. This is way to early to add fish. The tank must at least run 6 weeks before anyh fish or corals can be added to the system. You're also running a canister filter. That's fine lots of reefers use them but they have a drawback. Too prevent unwanted algae forming in your tank you will have to clean it every 2-3 days. The problem is the fodd particles and other stuff are going to lay there and turn into nitrates and phosphates(the fuel for algae). The best design we all use is just a simple sump design. This is a tank seperate from the main tank that houses the filter ware. You would want to have three types of filtration in your tank:

    Mechanical:

We usually have Protein skimmers as our mechanical filters. They remove proteins in the water before they can change into phosphates. You can read more about them in the skimmer department in the forum

    Biological:

These we get thanks to the live rock, live sand or algae scrubbers(please read up on algae scrubbers, they really are perfect for saving a buck or two). Mainly these guys house the bacteria and other organisms that filter the water from nutrients and other unwanted things.

    Chemical:

Last but notr least, this is any chemicals you use to help with water quality like activated carbon, NP pellets, zeo whatever. Normally most of us run carbon because this limmits the yellow colour in water and also prevents chemical warfare between corals.

Please se if you can keep the fish with an other reefer while you wait for the system to mature, this will help a lot in the long run.

Thanks for the advise! fish has been moved.

The cascade filter is only there for the chiller.

The red sea max has its own built in sump which also includes the protein skimmer and carbon etc...

this is the specs on my tank, check it out here...

Owh haha I don't know the red sae kits very well, but I quickly saw the specs and just would like to point out a few things if you haven't allready changed it:

The marked in read is what I just want to comment on. These will have the same effect as the canister filter. They trap detritus and create algae blooms. Same rules apply must be cleaned every 2-3days or you can just remove it (lots of people do it) and replace it with maybe live rock rubble or more carbon or anthing else of your choice or you can keep it open for now.

    Update

    Hey all,

just an update on my tank....

I am loving this RSM 250 max, it is truly a plug and play reef system, it has not given me any uphill so far... I am also going with the entire red sea reef maintenance program / supplements...

this is what I have achieved in around 5 weeks...
