Hey ya all I'm a new member of Marine Aquariums S.A....n so...
Well I would like to start of by asking a question or two.

First of all here is my tanks setup.
Its a 4 foot tank with sump, live sand and bio balls in the sump.Well I added the sand in about a week ago.I also have a canister filter hooked up, some live rock in my tank. There is a Atman skimmer in my sump too.

The problem that I have is with my NO3 level....I just can't get it down!I am performing a 20% water change every month with R.O water too.

    Should I buy a de-nitrater?

Yeah that is what most people say about those Bio balls.....I only use the canister filter as a pre-filter to my chiller and UV light.

    About 8 months now.

I agree with Prodigy. In marines the Bio Balls will cause you endless problems. You need to remove them. Do you have any ceramic rings in your sump? If so, you need to remove these too, little by little every week. How long has your tank been running? Has it completed the cycle yet?

    Welcome to MASA!!

The best would be a DSB, Deep Sand Bed, and some live rock. Those rings are going to also give you some issues in the long term...

IS you alkalinity in DKH or Meq? Your nitrates are sky high for a reef tank. My answer would be to get a better skimmer, preferably one that can do two times your tank volume. The canister isn't helping much especially if you don't clean it out properly

To decrease nitrates...more live rock cured live rock that is, getting some cheato(a light over your sump will allow cheato to grow any light is good) and putting it in your sump as well as some carbon and water changes is the best because its natural and nothing can beat a good water change...

Oh and as Jaak said a DSB although that will start a little nitrite spike for about a week then will kick in and start taking out nitrates

Alkalinity is in milli equaivalents per liter.
Here is what I'm thank's for the advice it helps allot. I'll remove the bio-balls and rings slowly over a few weeks or so.Ill then add live rock to my sump with a light which Ill use at night and I'll also leave the sand in.

As for a skimmer I'm thinking of a big reef octopus model....
Ill leave the canister with nothing in it but the first stage filter to filter the water before it enters the chiller n so.

    What do you guys think?

It's fine to use a canister with some Phosban in for example. Can you give us more info about your entire setup? Maybe some pics of the tank and sump?
