    Hi All

I have 2 large hermit crabs and 2 small ones. On sunday I got 2 colonies of zoas and some frags as well. I have noticed that small the hermits have been climing on top of the zoas and seem to have been digging inside them. Then yesterday I found 2 big holes in the zoa's so it seems that they have been eating them. This morning I found one of the big hermits had pulled the big colony off the rock and was hanging on to it. So my question is do hermits eat zoa's? If so what can I do? I have put them in the sump for now but if they eat the zoa's then I am going to have to get rid of them.

    Thanks

What type of hermits are they? I dont think hermits eat zoas, but they are opertunistic feeders and may feed on already damaged or dying zoas. I know one of my trumpets a while back fell and the one head was damaged and it attracted my hermits.

Please excuse the first pic but it is the best one I had. I am not sure what they are. I hope my zoas are not dying. The smaller ones have blue legs. They have done the most damage.

Kevin - where's the zoa's? I have never heard of hermits EATING zoa's before. My hermits sometimes clamber all over my zoa's to pick at algae etc...

This was just after I added them on sunday. So they are still a bit shocked. I do not have new photos of them with the holes in I can take some tonight.

@Lanzo - yes he did have a bit of algae on his shell but it is all gone now. That is an old pic.

Could it be that they are going for something inside the colony and just trying to get to it and by doing that they destroy the polops trying to get to it??

Both of them have been digging in the Zoa's but it is the smaller one that has done the most damage.

My hermits climb all over my Zoa's and eat scraps between the polyps they have never eaten the zoa's and the zoa's always open after the hermit have gone. I've got the local hermits with yellow band on the legs and a red legged hermit that hitchhiked its way into my tank.

Mmm I am not sure about that. I will take some pics of the zoa in question tonight and post it. there is a big hole in the middle of the one colony. Anyway I am going to leave the hermits in the sump for a while to let the zoa's settle and then I will put them back in the dt.

Sorry Kevin I doubt that it would be the hermits especially the small ones, mine clamber all over my zoas & polyps...no damage.

i have however heard of scarlet hermits causing havoc.

Maybe use torch after lioghts out too see if there isnt anything else....the hermit might actually be trying to get to that.

PS sorry Kevin should have phoned you, Im here 2 morrow
