This is a question that i have been wondering about for a while, how do Hermit crabs breed,do they need some type of dry/wet sand, or do they just deposit eggs/larvae in the substrate?

I'm sure they carry their larvae with them untill they are ready to be released into the water column, similar to most crabs and shrimp...

I was just thinking about it,coz i also have cushions reproducing, and snails laying eggs, and the babies chowing a lot of crap, which really help me. i just don't know the type of snail,it's creamish with pink stripes, and small (caught a few from Kzn rockpools, and they love algae). I'm gonna try something new, bear with me and comment on the idea, i'm currently planning on a conversion to DSB, will it possible to create a small "sandy beach" area, and house a few hermits for the experiment? I did look around on the net,but could only find posts about those big hermits. I think it's time someone must do some kind of research, a small creature doing a lot for a tank, yet we cannot reproduce it...

It is really not necessary to try and get these creatures to reproduce. The oceans do a good enough job, and their wild population are huge, all around the world.

To try replicate beaches and lunar cycles etc. will cost you more time and effort than walking from Vtown to Durban and back and collecting a bag full of hermit crabs ;)

But good luck with your quest, and keep us updated :)
