Well I as the title states I am going to attempt to make my own light unit.

I have a few questions regarding the building process , which is why I am looking for advice from the DIY'ers.

I am planning to make the frame from wood, so what type of wood can I use and what is the best product to make it waterproof or is that unnecessary?

And where can I buy t8 ballasts, end caps and the rest of the requirements in PE at a reasonable price ?

    Any advice will be appreciated.

I prefer solid wood but supawood is just as good. You can use woodoc marine clear sealer and stain it to the color you like, just leave it untill the smell is out completely before you fit it to your tank. It's better to treat the wood to prevent moist inside the wood

I have a 1.8m tank, so how long should the unit be? 1.2m? And can I use presswood?

This Thread says either/or ..but do suggest going with Aluminium as it's a material that can be cooled fast...
