Welcome to the world of marines!
Any reason you want to go for a diy skimmer? I speak from personal experience, if money is the factor, keep an eye out for a good second hand skimmer. Rather start on a good footing and as you gain knwledge/experience, then try the diy if you want.

    you mention 4ft..im assuming thats the standard 1200 X 450 X 450 ?
have a look in the for sale forums. Good, well looked after, second hand equipmet often pops up there.
Fopr something as important as a skimmer, you dont want to slack from the beginning. Get the best you can possibly afford. THis way yoy given some leeway incasr something goes wrong.

can you perhaps elaborate on this.
Do you mean one pump for the skimmer?

you gonna need 2 diff pumps man, as well as power heads in the display tank too, skimmer comes with pump, then you need a return pump too.

i mean have the skimmer in the sump and just use one pump to pump the water back to the display tank youll need a retuen pump to circulate water from the sump to the display tank.
The skimmer will need a separte pump to drive water/air into the skimmer chamber
