Not sure if I am posting in the right place. I need to fill my tank for the first time. I am going to collect water from the aquarium and stay in Parow. Is there anyone that is able to help me with containers that I could make use of and then return to you? I need to collect 500litres.

Anyone able to help me please pm.

I would avoid 2OC water at all cost. Rather invest in a good D&D RO unit - speak to Steve at Elite Aquatics in Durban road - and mix your own salt.

If you are on a budget , and PATIENT , and keep to WC regime there is no issues with 2 OC water (this is my experience)

Dave , what I would suggest , start the tank with 2 OC water , add your dead LR , invest in a good bacterial additive such as Special Blend , after a week start with water changes using synthetic salt (your system is small so it wont cost you an arm and a leg)

IMHO fish are fine with 2 OC water....corals dont like it that much

    Sorry Henk :tt2:

yip,i had those issues all the time with 2oceans water
    algae,red cyano and high nitrates.

spent lots on additives to clear that up,then decided synthetic salt and all issues cleared up.

    good advice frans gave
Henk,if he goes 2oceans water,ur products/additives will sell more in shops LOL

Dave, if you don't already have one, get a RO unit and a bucket of salt from your LFS. Depending on the brand of salt you get, you will be able to fill up your system with one bucket. Fill the system with RO, chuck in the salt and let it mix with powerheads/return pumps. I'm a little sceptical about 2OC's water and I'm sure you will be faced with algae issues from the start. Rather avoid the pain and start fresh.

Why does everyone have problem with 2OC water? I for one use there water since I started my tank and it is running for almost a year now and the only algae I have is green algae on my back pane and if I'm too lazy to clean the front and side panes(which is almost always) then it starts on there after a while. Other than that Ive had very little cyano in the past.

Because getting rid of GHA is a pain and takes a long time. And if you continue using water that causes GHA you will never get rid of it. You keep feeding it what it needs.

IMO start clean and save yourself the headaches.

Guys , I have spoken to dave a few times ...he is in NO RUSH to add a bioload to the system, thus my advice to start the system with 2 OC (budget) , then be patient and ride it out.

His LR is dead , it will be a waste to use synthetic to start and cure it .....MHO.

Yes , synthetic will save you some issues , but if you are in no rush , leave your lights off , do WC...its a cheap way to start

If that time comes then I'll have to swap to salt mix.
