    Hey guys

Been wondering bout this for a while now.

What can I use as a substrate. Initially I wanted to go the crushed coral route, but it seems that its undesirable to use it.

Aragonite would be ideal, but my wallet simply wont agree with that

Can I use good old fashioned sea sand collected below the low tide water mark? I'm a bit weary of playsand because of the silica content.

    Cheers

I'll go play sand route, wash it like a 20 times with normal water and like 5 times with RO water, and when it's nice and clean it will be totally white in your tank which looks great. I've been running it in my tank for more than two years with now problems.

Playsand is inert, meaning it does not leach silica. If something is wrong in your setup, and the sand does leach silica, so should your glass.

I use playsand for my DSB, and until a couple of months ago as my display substrate. No problems.

While we are on the subject with substrate, I saw on one of the other threads a while ago a guy had black substrate that he got from a LFS, would that also be fine or would there be any hidden complications in it.

I think that black substrate that hes got in his tank is black aragonite nothing wrong with that just exspensive.
